Portraits are the greatest, and if you’ve ever wanted to get involved with the intricacies of how to paint one then sign up with me Ali Gillett and get involved! Portraiture, for me, is the maths of art making, which for some may be an instant turn off but it seems I like a bit of structure! The endless abstraction and ‘anything goes’ of the art world tends to constrict my own mind, I like a wrong and a right to guide me, and portraiture does just that… The nose is either wrong or right, the highlight on the cheek is in the wrong place or the right place, the emotion caught in the expression wrong, or right.
Over the course of this 2 day workshop we will work on an acrylic portrait from beginning to end, starting with our initial drawing and finishing up with layers of glazing and critique. Utilising a split primary palette we will be learning and applying values and colour theory, colour mixing, and getting curious about the nuance behind directional mark making and the tension that exists between barely there brush marks beside a tight and controlled focus.
Each student will need to provide an image to paint, a canvas to paint on, and the desire to learn.
