A few weekends ago our tutor, ALi (@brave__arts ) hosted our annual drawing for painting workshop to a sold out class of 10 AWESOME students!

These shots are from the end of the day, after a morning spent learning the many, varied, and at times rather confusing tools of Drawing Analysis.

If there's one thing our students learn at this workshop it is that THERE IS A LOT TO LEARN!

Rather wonderfully however, that's not the only thing they learnt. Each student, by the end of the day, was able to pretty seamlessly block in the general shape of their images with correct thrusts, useful vectors, and with awareness of relationship and form...
Which is to say, they did a great job that made their tutor VERY proud!

We love passing on the foundational skills of art making, they're what make the rest so much easier to do!
And we have two more foundation-based workshops coming up in July, working with Colour Theory.

Hi art lovin' friends!
This is us, just in case you were wondering...
Mother- Daughter team, De and Ali, tutors of brilliance here at Arts Tree... Closely followed by Graham, the caretaker of admin and things that need fixing!

De has always been an Artist!
While raising the kids she was a pastel painter and sculptor, before diving into painting, stencilling, and texture following her BA in Fine Art about a decade or so ago.
De spends the majority of her time working with luscious layers of paint over multiple, large canvases in the hopes of capturing the next 'thing' that inspires her big ol' creative brain!
In her spare time you'll find her singing her little heart out with choirs around Brisbane.

Ali has found her home in the art world by dancing around the edges.
Rather than wanting to be an 'artist' herself, Ali loves learning about the skills, techniques and nuances to be found in making art well, and passing that onto anyone who will listen! After earning her own BA in Fine Art and a Dip. in Art Therapy, Ali runs her own art teaching business and works with Regis aged care homes, in high schools around Brisbane, and with Mission Australia.
Ali is currently studying for a Masters in Counselling and hopes to make the world a braver and more vulnerable place through art making.

So that's who we are, how we spend our time, and what you can expect when you come to a class or a workshop here at Arts Tree!

We have limited spaces in our weekly classes, but there's usually a fair bit of movement so always nice to put your name down. And we also have workshops, single day skill builders, and 2 day 'finished piece' extravaganzas.

We're an acrylic painting school utterly obsessed with vibrancy and joy... and we'd love to meet you!

Welcome to Arts Tree!
We are an expressionist art school focusing on acrylics, technique and skill. But we don't expect you to know anything when you arrive... We'll sort that out!

Every student works on their own piece at their own pace and our tutors @degillettcox and @brave__arts teach absolutely every little thing that they possibly can!

Here's a lil snapshot of landscapes that are in progress hanging on our classroom walls, all painted by our amazing students!

We have 6 classes weekly with VERY limited spaces, as well as monthly workshops.

The other weekend, 11 of our students held their v

The other weekend, 11 of our students held their very first exhibition and it was stuuuuuunnnning!!!!

These clever artists have been working with our tutor and founder @degillettcox for around 5 years each... That's a lot of painting and a lot of skill building!

And it was glorious to see their proud faces in front of their works hanging on a wall outside of our classroom.

Our beautiful students, the community we've built, the friendships, inspiration, and pride that grows, ALL of that is why we are so very bloody happy to own and run this family business!

The exhibition will be showing @kayewest.studios until May 5th and we HIGHLY recommend you check it out and then check US out!

Those 6 buzz words make us feel damn proud Tracy!!!!
As an art school, there is nothing better than being described by those 6 words.
NOTHING!!!!

We may not be great at admin, answering phones, or responding to emails... BUT we are great at encouraging a supportive environment where we can teach you lots of skills and techniques in very fun ways, so that you can walk out of here GLOWING with pride!

We're not perfect, but that side of things we've really nailed. We always have room for more friendly faces here at Arts Tree, and if all of the above sounds very lovely to you, maybe you're our sort of person????

We've got weekly classes and monthly workshops, and we've pretty much got a flavour to suit everyone... But mainly those of you who like bold, expressive colour, and a loose and fun approach, that's grounded in a bit of nerdy art theory.

A little round up for your Wednesday of some #work

A little round up for your Wednesday of some #worksinprogress from our studio classroom in #brisbane !

At Arts Tree we're about whatever you're about. As long as we can see where you want to go, and we're doing it with acrylic paint, we'll do everything we can to teach you everything we know!

And between you and us, there's quite a lot to teach!

Every single one of these canvases has been worked on utilising the rules of colour theory, drawing analysis, composition, and critique, whilst at the same time, we encourage each artist to open themselves up to making lots of mistakes... because that's usually where the gold is hidden!

Drawing for painting, a one day workshop coming up

Drawing for painting, a one day workshop coming up THIS SATURDAY where you can learn how to actually draw instead of just thinking that you 'should' be able to draw.

But what else could we call this workshop?

How about:
- 'Breaking the world apart so that you can see it's all just squares and triangles'.... ?
(too long and clunky)

- 'A face and a flower are exactly the same, watch me prove it'...?
(too arrogant)

- 'Everything's easy if you simplify it enough'...????
(OOH I like it!)

But honestly, all of the above is true.

This workshop will teach you how to view the world in ways that will enable you to make better paintings.
And one of the ways we'll do that is show you how literally everything is just a mixture of geometric shapes.
Also, there is no real difference between a face and a flower when we're recreating them on a canvas... It's all psychological.
Finally, yeah, if stuff is too complicated for you to understand then you probably just need to go back a step and break it down a bit.

I mean, even rocket science can be broken down into pretty simple steps!

With all of that being said, we have 2 tickets left and and 5 sleeps until the workshop so if learning to paint or draw better was your goal for 2024, we reckon you should buy a ticket!!!!!!

What you see here folks is called a 'gamut' of col

What you see here folks is called a 'gamut' of colours.
Or, at least the beginnings of one.

What does that mean though?

A gamut is 'the complete range or scope of things' and in regard to art and paint mixing, the gamut would refer to ALL of the colours you can mix from any given selection of colours.

Our student here is getting to know a Triadic colour scheme.

-First, she want on Pinterest and looked up 'Colour schemes'.
-Then she scrolled around until she found a scheme (selection of colours) that she enjoyed.
-We then ran those colours around the colour wheel to find what sort of scheme it is (triadic).
-In addition to black and white, we now have everything we need to find out the roughly 5000 possible variations of colour (!) that we have available to us through this scheme.

And that my friends, is a gamut!

If none of that made sense to you, you should come to our 'How to: Colour Wheels' workshop on July 13.

If some of it made sense, the you should come to our 'Applied Colour Theory' workshop on July 14.

But, you can totally come to both!

A wee look at some of the glory hanging around our studio classroom currently.
Isn't it all just bloody great?!

We're an acrylic painting school in Brisbane's Wynnum West.

We have 6 weekly classes, with only got 2 seats available!
