Grounding a canvas...

We've said it once, and we'll say it again... Death to all white canvases!!!!!
Just jokes, but honestly, get rid of it.

What could a plain white canvas possibly add?
Nothing!
Except highlights. One endless highlight from edge to edge which means you can't truly see what your lights are until your painting is pretty much finished. So, rather than waiting till the end, just start at the beginning and GROUND YOUR CANVAS.

What with though???

Anything really.
We've curated a selection of warm groundings here, a bit orange-y, burnt sienna-ish... But honestly you can start with anything.

The goal: to get rid of the white with something that is neither black or white.
So simple it seems complex!

WORK IN PROGRESS!!

The best to see, the best to inspire, the greatest thing for all artists to spend time with is other artists work in progress. Which is why our classroom walls proudly show the latest works coming to life over weeks and months of hard (sort of) work.

We have 5 spaces available in our classes, 3 of them on Tuesday nights; 6:30-8:30pm.
We know it's a week night and it's hard to work up that energy after work but WE BELIEVE IN YOU!

We don't care how much or how little experience you have, We take the reigns there and just teach you whatever you need to learn. HOW exciting!

The other week we introduced the limited palette t

The other week we introduced the limited palette to you via the portrait pallet of Anders Zorn. Which you'll see again in pic 2.

But that's not the only limited palette, in fact you were probably taught to use a limited palette in school... Pic 3.
This is the standard limited palette, it's cheap to have and gives you a pretty solid gamut of colours. Crisp oranges, cleanish greens, but really dirty purples.

Which is where pic 4 comes in, a split primary palette which truly gives you the full gamut of pretty much every colour you could need to mix... Although keep in mind that any time you mix a colour, it will be dull in comparison to a true hue.

Finally in pic 5 we have another palette idea which utilises the opposite temperatures of the colour wheel, a warm and a cool plus white and maybe even a black if you're keen? QUITE limited but not necessarily limiting.

You see, what happens with each new tube of paint/ colour/ hue is that you get a whole new range of possibilities. The more tubes, the more possibilities, the more choices you have to make as an artist.

By utilising a limited palette, at least sometimes, you're getting better at colour mixing, you're becoming familiar with particular gamuts, and you may even cut down the amount of $$$ you're spending at the art store!

Another journey for the ages with this recently finished water lily from student, Donna...

Started off as something completely different, a set of balanced rocks, softly reflecting in a tranquil pool of water... A lovely image but the choice itself was filled with 'shoulds'.

I've already painted flowers so I 'should' paint something else.
I like the colours in the background so that 'should' be enough.

Whatever your reasons are for painting something, if 'should' is in the mix, we GUARANTEE it's going to fail.
Or at the very least be very bloody hard to bring to life.
Because 'shoulds' aren't romantic or motivating, or fun or awesome. 'Shoulds' are filled with obligation to a rule you ultimately made for yourself and likely disagree with.

2 classes in and our student worked it out, painted it out and started again! This time with true joy, enthusiasm and love for her subject.
Which is important because it is this joy and drive that sustains us through the inevitable swamps along the way to our end zone.

'Should' offers no sustenance in comparison.

Have you ever noticed that the paintings we've jus

Have you ever noticed that the paintings we've just started don't look like they're finished yet?

What we mean is, when you start a painting it doesn't look finished.

But we also mean that the painting you end up with, looks quite a lot different to the bits you start with.

What we're trying to say is; if you're painting looks weird at the start, that doesn't mean it's going to look like that at the end. It's literally just the start.

Are we being clear here???

Because definitely, this lesson takes SO MUCH TEACHING.

Our students FREAK OUT all the time, but especially at the start of the painting. Because, and we kid you not, "It doesn't look finished"... No shit, we say 😂😜... with empathy.

Your beginnings should always look a bit weird, at least with acrylic painting. You've got forgiveness with this medium, and layers of mistakes end up making really exciting and fun finished pieces...
And to be perfectly honest, the finished piece is never what we're after. If it was, our students would paint a single canvas and then never come back.

The finished work is never the holy grail, it's the journey that got you there that holds the treasure.

That's a long way of saying, "Here's some student work in progress after grounding and sketching". ENJOY!

We are Arts Tree.
We recently started using new editing software and we think the results speak for themselves.. What do you think?

Anyway, Left to right we've got:

Ali aka daughter dearest who is almost 40 (get your birthday presents ready!!!), has been teaching art-making with us for nearly 7 years now, and also takes care of most of the social media stuff (hi, it me).
Ali also runs her own business, @brave__arts , and comes to her students with a passion for art making and mental health, as well as a hefty love for having a lot of fun and embracing the silly side of creativity.

Graham aka father dearest was dropped off by aliens a few decades ago and has been really enjoying his time on earth ever since. His love is in stewardship for our block of paradise here in Wynnum, and making sure the admin side of Arts Tree runs relatively smoothly. He is also easily distrac

De aka mother dearest, crawled out of a paint tube a few moons ago and has been working out how to get back in ever since.... That is to say, she loves a bit of paint!
De has been teaching for 2 decades, which means she's got a thing or two to teach and what's really cool is that she keeps no secrets.... Students (and daughters) get the best and the worst of that!

That's us!
A very small part of our larger family that run an increasingly excellent art school in Wynnum West. We teach acrylic painting in a rather scandalous fashion and hold nothing back in our quest to pass on everything good, juicy, and helpful!
ADULTS only!
Kids suck (just jokes), but also, adults are better.

It's official!
We're great!

While social media and Facebook have their wins, to be honest, most of our students come to us via word of mouth.
According to our students, we are the bee's knees!

Our students share their work and their experience with their people and before you know it, we've got another student who ends up painting with us for the next 3-7 years (which is how long most of our students have been with us!).

The best thing about doing something well is that it generates pride. And we're really proud of this little art school of ours!
We're proud of our students, the work they make, the lessons they learn, the way that we teach, and the ways our students continue to teach us.

It's a win/ win here at Arts Tree!

Art.
It'll get ya... doubting yourself, pulling your hair out and wondering how on earth you're going to pull it together! But pull it together we do, eventually...

Take this bloody excellent piece by student Karyn, finished pic right at the start here. It's stunning, sumptuous, vibrant, and dazzling (if we do say so ourselves!).

But it didn't start there... In fact, Karyn painted over the background around 4 times by the time she was done.
Because she didn't like what she had.
And isn't that awesome!?

What mistakes and things we don't like teach us is this: We don't need to be perfect ALL THE TIME.
They teach us how to persevere.
They teach us compassion, eventually.
They even teach us what's right... because a mistake is usually oh so obviously wrong. 🤮😂

Some paintings fly out of our paintbrushes in a rush. Others take time and hard work.
Neither is more worthy, and both are filled with the high that can only come from creativity!!!

We do have very select spots in our evening classes on Tuesday and Wednesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 pm.
