Drawing for painting, a one day workshop coming up THIS SATURDAY where you can learn how to actually draw instead of just thinking that you 'should' be able to draw.

But what else could we call this workshop?

How about:
- 'Breaking the world apart so that you can see it's all just squares and triangles'.... ?
(too long and clunky)

- 'A face and a flower are exactly the same, watch me prove it'...?
(too arrogant)

- 'Everything's easy if you simplify it enough'...????
(OOH I like it!)

But honestly, all of the above is true.

This workshop will teach you how to view the world in ways that will enable you to make better paintings.
And one of the ways we'll do that is show you how literally everything is just a mixture of geometric shapes.
Also, there is no real difference between a face and a flower when we're recreating them on a canvas... It's all psychological.
Finally, yeah, if stuff is too complicated for you to understand then you probably just need to go back a step and break it down a bit.

I mean, even rocket science can be broken down into pretty simple steps!

With all of that being said, we have 2 tickets left and and 5 sleeps until the workshop so if learning to paint or draw better was your goal for 2024, we reckon you should buy a ticket!!!!!!

What you see here folks is called a 'gamut' of colours.
Or, at least the beginnings of one.

What does that mean though?

A gamut is 'the complete range or scope of things' and in regard to art and paint mixing, the gamut would refer to ALL of the colours you can mix from any given selection of colours.

Our student here is getting to know a Triadic colour scheme.

-First, she want on Pinterest and looked up 'Colour schemes'.
-Then she scrolled around until she found a scheme (selection of colours) that she enjoyed.
-We then ran those colours around the colour wheel to find what sort of scheme it is (triadic).
-In addition to black and white, we now have everything we need to find out the roughly 5000 possible variations of colour (!) that we have available to us through this scheme.

And that my friends, is a gamut!

When we say 'drawing for painting' THIS is what we mean!

A weird shape, surrounded by other weird shapes that let you know where to put your paintbrush.

Because a painting is like a delicious trifle.
Layers upon layers of 'happy little accidents' that combine together to look utterly delightful, but that were kind of hellish to work through and on paper might not make much sense (fruit salad, jelly, cake, and custard at once???)🤮😆🤯👌....

When it doesn't make sense, you make sense through your foundational skills, like drawing or colour theory, or critique.

And if you don't have those skills? Well, we guess you just kinda flounder and faff about and don't really get any better??

If you DO want to get better, and you've done quite enough faffing about, why not begin the process of loading up on your foundations? Because we've got a workshop coming up that will do just that!

Do you remember our #beforewebegin series from last year?
The full series is in our highlights, but here's a recap...

Basically, it's a little stop gap to remind you of some of the things you might want to consider before you begin painting... because sometimes we dive into our paintings a bit too quickly!

We start laying thick paint onto our canvases, and get all excited about the end product before we've so much as checked that it's a good image, with a solid composition and interesting value measurements!

But what does all of that meeean????

Basically, it means this: SLOW DOOOOOWN

Check your composition and see if it is interesting and a little off-centre as opposed to BOOM right in the middle.

Check your values, are they telling an interesting story about light or is it all a bit too blah blah boring???

Draw your general shapes in, get used to your image before you start making things too permanent.

The end will arrive before you know it, take time to enjoy the process of getting there.

The thing that we probably help out with the most

The thing that we probably help out with the most as Art Tutors is getting started, and then at the other end of the spectrum... the finishing touches.

Usually everyone is ok as they move through the middle bit, but it's getting started that freaks a lot of us out... And we think that's probably because there's usually a whole lot riding on our shoulders as we first put brush to canvas.

But there doesn't need to be!

You can get started by drawing methodically and in detail before laying down an underpainting.
Or
You can get started by looking closely at your colour theory and recalibrating your image to suit.
Or
You can make like a 5 year old and just throw some paint about!

The thing is, whatever you choose, you're doing it right.
We promise.

You will learn the drawing, the colour mixing, how to get glow, the gifts of glazing, how and where to be bold with colours, and the importance of your directional mark making...

Drawing... Hands down the skill that every Artist

Drawing... Hands down the skill that every Artist seems to think they SHOULD magically have, yet very few of us actually work on acquiring it!
So, what can you expect from our magical and excellent drawing workshop coming up on April 27th????

First, we begin by setting you up with 9 points of analysis which are essentially ways, steps, or techniques that allow you to truly see and get curious about the scene in front of you.

If you swipe through the images you'll see 6 of them interacting on an image of a hand:
Thrust,
General Shape,
Pivot Points,
Pairs,
Vector of analysis, and
Repeated Motif.

Notice how each of these points of analysis gives us a different understanding of the hand we're trying to draw?
It also forces us to see the image not as a 'hand' as such, but rather an interlocking web of relationships that form what we think of as a hand....

Because we're not actually painting a 'hand', are we?
No, we're painting an illusion that LOOKS like a hand!
Which means we need to get curious about what holds it all together.

Once we've learnt the language and techniques for drawing, we'll do some practise work together before rounding out the day with some still-life drawing and critique (essentially, how to fix a bad drawing).

If you are a 'bad' drawer, don't know how to draw, or are held back in any way because of your drawing skills then this workshop is for you!!!
