artstreecreations

We teach you everything we know about everything we know.
Acrylics. Technique. Party. Tutors: @degillettcox @brave__arts

There seems to be a trend towards 'efficiency in a There seems to be a trend towards 'efficiency in art'... A compulsion to just get to the end when it's all perfect and awesome.

But the thing is, if that were the true aim, we would never make more than one painting. If it were about the destination, then we would stop.

So it mustn't be about the destination, it MUST be the journey that keeps us hooked.

Take this portrait, drawing through to the first layers of colour (seen in pic 4) in ONE class....

EXCEPT it wasn't one class.

Because this is the student's third painting with us, so she's been practising her drawing since February... Ditto for colour mixing, experimentation with mediums, and tool technique.

In addition to those 6 months of practise, we also spent an entire class choosing just the right source image and then manipulating that image using various filters to get just the right sort of vibe that she was after.

THEN our hard-working student came to class with no less than 8 printed images showing us various filters and colour ways, including black and white images.
As well as images of other artist's work to keep her inspired.

FINALLY, we got it all to scale, cropped up all nice before we began so that our drawing is (almost) effortless. The next skill set our student will be learning?
Applied colour theory and the importance of value and temperature!

The destination is the finished piece on the wall that has you feeling chuffed... But it's the journey that keeps you coming back for more, and it's the journey we're here for baby, yeah!!!

If you're after a one-night stand, we're not the art school for you. BUT if you want a real, committed, sunday kinda love, then we have got you!

In classes or workshops we'll teach you everything we know, about everything we know.
Drawing, portraiture, and colour theory workshops are coming up AND we've got limited spots in our weekly classes....

SO stop worrying about the destination and just get in the gosh darn car!!!

Come for a wander around our studio classroom with Come for a wander around our studio classroom with us!

We've got recently finished pieces and works in progress...
Seascapes, cityscapes, treescapes, flowers, portraits, and boats.
Just a regular class!

We don't work in terms or set skill sets.
Instead, we just keep it nice and open and have each person working on their own piece at their own pace.

It keeps it fresh, exciting and means there's always something fun going on!

If you would like to be involved we've got limited spots available and we'd love to meet you!
If you've never painted before just come on down for a free trial and we'll see what we can do to win you over.

We aren't fans of making mistakes. It's not like w We aren't fans of making mistakes.
It's not like we looooove them...
It's that, after a combined 60+ years of making art we here at Arts Tree know 3 things to be true:

Death will come
Taxes exist
Mistakes will be made

And if you want to paint a portrait like the one you see in picture 1... You will simply need to work through the layers of absolute shite that come before it (see pictures 2-4).
FACTS!!!

So how do we do that?
How do we keep on working through inevitable mistakes and parts of our canvas that look like absolute rubbish?

We turn back to our skill sets:
Drawing analysis
Colour theory
Values
Critique (line, tone, colour, edge)

Our skills ensure the foundation is strong, but building those skills can be a vulnerable space... We get it, because we know it! As working artists and art educators we teach this stuff BECAUSE WE LIVE AND BREATHE IT!
There is nothing easy about admitting we don't know enough, and there's nothing easy about the path to mastery.

The thing is: if great art is the end goal, skill building is simply part of the path!
We're all going to make mistakes and make weird looking paintings, we've just gotta build the skills that will help us keep going as we do!

And we've got workshops for that!!!
See what we've got at artstree.com.au or head out to our link in bio.

We've gotchu!

Workshops coming up here, under the Arts Tree! Wh Workshops coming up here, under the Arts Tree!

When Mah and Pah launched this place 13 years ago they had no idea where it was going or that their days would be blessed with my unending presence.

BUT HERE I AM!!
And now we run an art school TOGETHER and they will never know peace!

Apart from terrorising my parents however, I also teach a few weekend workshops and teach a few weekly classes, as does mother-bear @degillettcox .

What do we teach???
EVERYTHING WE BLOODY WELL CAN!
And... everything that has proved useful in our own creative existence. Why gatekeep?

More importantly, we teach the QUITE nerdy beginnings of any skill.
We don't just teach you HOW to mix orange...
We teach you how to mix a cool and a warm orange.
We'll demonstrate how these subtle changes help to show perspective.
We'll introduce how each of those oranges can be further manipulated to create form and volume in your image.
We'll show you how to draw badly, then critique your way to pure bloody artistic perfection!!!!!
We'll show you how to be bold and brave and embrace your mistakes and trust your skill set and turn them into gold.

In short, we'll teach you the stuff you need to know to make good art!

Head on over to our website and have a read through what's available, then buy yourself a cheeky little ticket!

Our next workshop is a drawing workshop, and you m Our next workshop is a drawing workshop, and you might be wondering what we teach at a drawing workshop...

Well, we teach you how to draw!!!

But more than that, we teach you how to truly SEE your image.

Because we're never drawing a dog, or a tree, or a kingfisher.

We're drawing a series of shapes, on particular angles, that intersect at specific points, which are aligned with other shapes, on angles, intersecting.

These images are from a recent workshop with @degillettcox.
We gave our students a 10 minute demonstration on how to draw.
Then we helped them bring their images to life.
These were NOT practised artists!
BUT, with the right tools, they made magical stuff happen!

Now, imagine what you'll be able to do after a whole day of coaching and learning from the delightful @brave__arts ??!!!

Drawing well is not for the talented few.
It's a skill set that pretty much anyone can learn! Yes, EVEN YOU!!!

The scholarship seat is taken but we've got tickets available at our website: artstree.com.au > SHOP > WOrkshop or via the link in our bio... We'd love to have you!

Most of the frustrated artists we meet seem to hav Most of the frustrated artists we meet seem to have a belief that they should just *be able* to draw really, really, well.
Without effort, training, or practise.

Many of those same artists decide that they're going to stick to "more abstract" ways of working to make up for this lack.

There's two ways we feel about this:
🤮&🤣.

The thing is, we get it. Because we had THE SAME belief! We'd been through high-school art classes, and even university... We had proof of many, many drawings stored all around our homes. BUT they were accidents.
Happy accidents that happened to look good, but we didn't know how we got there, how to correct the wrong bits, or how to do them again.

ENTER DRAWING ANALAYSIS!!!

This is a tool set of 9 different ways to analyse the image or scene you're drawing, as you draw it, to give you a dependable drawing that you can trust!

And THAT"S the thing!

TRUST!

If you're going to trust the process and have a good time making your art, you have to trust something.... And you could simply trust yourself... we guess... But like, why not just learn a freaking skill that will do it FOR you???

LEARN TO DRAW
LEARN TO DRAW
LEARN TO DRAW
IT'S REALLY NOT THAT HARD!

Ali has been teaching this one for 6 years, to around 300 people. So why not join the Alumni??

Throw your questions in the comments, and throw your money at the website... Go buy yourself a ticket and set your self freeee!!!

Are you one of those people who thinks they CAN'T Are you one of those people who thinks they CAN'T DRAW???

EVERY single time Mum and I are out and about and introduce ourselves as artists we get this, "Oh, I would love to make art but I just can't draw!"

LOL we say, shortly followed by "If we only had a dollar..."

Because if we did have a dollar each time someone said this to us we would be able to bloody retire yesterday!

You would be amazed how many people let their lack of drawing skills stand in their way, in fact you might even be one of them.
Squandering your art- making years and tightening your circle of inspiration because you're CERTAIN that you simply can't draw.

The thing is, if you don't know what the following words mean in regard to drawing, then you literally have never been taught:
- Thrust
- Vector of analysis
- Pivot points
- Repeated motif

How did you go? Do you know what any of them mean in relation to drawing?
Yes? Great.
No? Even better!!!! Enrol in our drawing workshop we've got coming up in July!

Your lack of drawing skills are holding back your creative practice. You can pretend this doesn't matter and continue to draw munted hands, weird looking faces, or maybe just go 'abstract'.....
OR
You can step into the scary world of a brand new skill that will unlock unknown powers and likely propel you into a magical land of self-belief.

This workshop is for people who think they "can't draw". You will be working alongside our tutor superstar, Ali @brave__arts , who will teach you fundamental drawing skills, critiquing skills, and maybe even sing you a song or two.
The singing will be sub-par, the teaching will be excellent.

This workshop has been taught to 14 year olds, 96 year olds, and everyone in between. So please, if you're thinking that YOU ALONE are a 'bad' drawer, come along and let us blow your gosh darn mind!

Tickets via artstree.com.au > Shop> Workshops or via the link in our bio!

We used to use green to paint leaves. We really d We used to use green to paint leaves.

We really did.
And while they still might look green, to be honest, those greens have changed a lot.

Why?

Because we paid attention to the ACTUAL colours of leaves and they're not really green!
At least not the green that comes out of a tube, that stuff is too clean, too perfect, too.... green!

What REAL greens look like are a bit dirtier. A bit more toned down... And there's always a bit of death. A leaf dying here, an infestation there, all small nuances that, much like critique, will elevate your painting practice VERY rapidly!

So how do we make our greens more believable?

Complementary: Throw in a bit of red or orange into your greens. This will instantly take out the 𝒢𝑅𝐸𝐸𝒩! and turn it more into 𝖌𝖗𝖊𝖊𝖓.

Tone: Add a bit of grey to your green. Even those really bright ones! What you'll find is that it is the contrast and relationship between colours that make things bright and light, NOT the fluro-ness of your green!

Value: ALWAYS!!!! Make sure your greens are dark enough and light enough.

Analogous darkening and lightening: Darken your greens with blue lighten them with yellow... Or blue! The sky is blue after all, so any light reflecting off of your leaves on a bright, sunny, blue skyed day will have some blue in it!

Confused?
Got colour queries to share?
Get into the comments and ask us some questions!

And, as ever, check out our workshops or come to our weekly classes. There is a lot to learn when it comes to painting and we don't need to do it alone!
