This lesson is one that we teach A LOT here at Art This lesson is one that we teach A LOT here at Arts Tree. Like, EVERY SINGLE class we hold! We all know how to be critical. It's like breathing, especially to women. We know how to be mean, to ourselves, to others, to our canvases. But mean isn't helpful. And it's not nice to work with. So what do we teach instead? CRITIQUE! Critique can hurt. OOOOOh she can smart! But critique is also the friend you call when you need the TRUTH. Not the mean truth. But the honest truth. "Those jeans are bad, but the red pants are awesome" "That colour doesn't suit you, but this one does" And that's exactly who we call on when we're looking at our, and our student's canvasses. The biggest thing we see taking up space in our cl The biggest thing we see taking up space in our classroom studio is usually courage. But sometimes, it's fear. Sometimes fear gets into every single facet of our creative practice and it's bloody hard to shake it out! Which is why you've got to move quick sometimes! If you're moving quickly you don't have time to let fear catch up to you. All the questions about how good or bad your painting is, can't matter when you've only got 30 minutes to work with! Or at least, that's the theory behind ALi's #30minutemasterpiece workshop! During a 30 minute masterpiece you typically break it up like this: 5 minutes for drawing (Don't worry, we'll teach you that) 5 minutes values (We'll teach you that too) 10 minutes core colours (yep, we've got you) 5 minutes critique and correct 5 minutes critique and correct DONE! There's no room for thinking, or fear, or even breathing really!! It's just fast-paced, action-packed painting.... Think of it like exposure therapy! These images are all from Ali's workshop she held up at Buderim Craft Cottage last year, and each painting, you guessed it, was painted in 30 minutes! This isn't about painting a perfect piece in 30 minutes, it's about getting 'perfection' out of the way and replacing it with practise. 30 minutes 3 days a week will get you to perfect a LOT quicker than 1 polished piece ever will! No sculptures, or watercolour or oil paints here. Just acrylics. Why? Because that's what your artist-tutors use in their own studios! We teach what we use, because that's what we know. The 30 minute masterpiece walked into Ali's life o The 30 minute masterpiece walked into Ali's life off her phone screen one day around 5 years ago. A group of artists were using time restriction as a way to prompt their creativity and, deep in her own creative rut, Ali decided to give it a go... 7 days later, Ali had painted more than she had in the entire 6 months previous to that... She was proud! Starting to feel more confident, Ali decided to make the most of those 30 minutes and dove into learning the foundational skills that would allow her to 'effortlessly' paint anything she wanted! Drawing. Colour mixing. Values. Critique. No stone was left unturned in her 30 minute quest and these days she brings it to her audience in a neatly packaged 1 day extravaganza of hard painting action!!! This workshop teaches us how to: - Get out of our way, choose a god-damn image, pick up a paint brush and start painting! - Get started with a drawing we can trust. - Make bold mistakes - Make bold corrections - Loosen the heck up and get our butts into the studio! We don't know EVERYTHING there is to know about pa We don't know EVERYTHING there is to know about painting.... But we may just know the little bit extra that you don't yet, like how to get your lights glowing!!! Now, when we are talking light we are talking about electricity, the sun, or candles. And you'll know, especially if you've done a house renovation, exactly how much light changes the feeling in a room. And that FEELING is exactly what you're trying to capture as a painter. If you're painting an overcast day, the FEELING of the day is different to a bright, sunny day! And the quality of your light can only feel different if it's actually PHYSICALLY different. The hardest part to wrap our heads around has been the terminology. Colour temperatures in colour theory are the opposite to how we use them in regard to light temperature, so the language can trip us up sometimes! And if YOU get tripped up by light and colour theory then you should totally come to our workshops we've got coming up in October! We have two workshops across two days that will help to dispel some common myths about colour, show you the good stuff the colour wheel teaches us, and, you guessed it, create some glow!! The best, most unexpected part of our art school?? The best, most unexpected part of our art school??? The community. 100% The space is filled with a maximum of 10 people, from different walks of life who have found a space to exist as themselves, for themselves. There's a very real camaraderie and understanding. When someone is struggling there's a room filled with people who get it. When someone is having a great day when it's all flowing, we all get to celebrate! More than that though, we're sharing recipes and gripes. Decompressing from life stress, offering help or advice for hurts and pains. The village is here, and you're all welcome!!! We're a pretty niche kind of art school, and that We're a pretty niche kind of art school, and that could be an obstacle..... But we've decided to view it in a decidedly different way. By restricting our use of different products, we're forced to play around and experiment with what we DO have. We're an acrylic-based art school, which means the ONLY thing we teach here is how to paint with acrylic paints. But that doesn't mean we only paint in one style! It means we get inventive and playful.... Constantly expanding and building on our skill sets as teachers and as student-artists! Enjoy these softer, darker, looser works in progress from our generous students. Elements of watercolour, transparency, and abstraction at play, all while using just one type of paint, a few different mediums, and few layering techniques. What do you think?
