A few images of our feathered friends both past an A few images of our feathered friends both past and current from the walls of the Arts Tree classroom! Our students are, quite obviously, amazing. And they never fail to amaze us with their wild and wonderful dreams that they'd next like to bring to life. At Arts Tree, unlike most other art schools, we don't operate in terms. We just have an open format with each artist working on their own piece at their own pace. This means we'll have a mixed media piece, alongside a more realistic piece, with a naïve style thrown in for fun! This keeps us on our creative toes as we bounce between students and ALWAYS having a good time, inspired by the MANY ways of making that exist. Here's a few portraits painted over the last coupl Here's a few portraits painted over the last couple of years by our resident portrait artist and tutor, Ali Gillett @brave__arts ... What does Ali love about portraits? They're straightforward, either right or wrong. And while that can mean that there's a lot of mistakes to correct along the way, this rigidity makes Ali feel free to play around in all the other ways! What other ways???? With brushstroke and colour, and subject matter! Why get caught up in 'correct' skin tone when you can have a blast and paint whatever you want? Why get all tight and tiny and perfect with your brushstrokes when you can be loose and messy and raw??? Why paint 'serious' when you get a bit weird? Isn't that the point? At Arts Tree we believe that artists are meant to play. We advocate for a world of artists having a rollicking good time and not getting too caught up in the stuff that non-creatives care about! For probably the last time here at Arts Tree, Ali will be hosting her very popular, very excellent drawing and portraiture workshops here at Arts Tree in July and August respectively. Saturday July 26th; Learn to draw. You're not meant to just 'know' how to draw. It's a skill set, like carpentry. There are tools to learn, and years of practise before you go calling yourself a master tradie, but this is where we start! Weekend of August 16 and 17; Colourful Portraits Come and play around with getting brave and punchy with your portraits. Beginners are welcome and encouraged to both workshops... There seems to be a trend towards 'efficiency in a There seems to be a trend towards 'efficiency in art'... A compulsion to just get to the end when it's all perfect and awesome. But the thing is, if that were the true aim, we would never make more than one painting. If it were about the destination, then we would stop. So it mustn't be about the destination, it MUST be the journey that keeps us hooked. Take this portrait, drawing through to the first layers of colour (seen in pic 4) in ONE class.... EXCEPT it wasn't one class. Because this is the student's third painting with us, so she's been practising her drawing since February... Ditto for colour mixing, experimentation with mediums, and tool technique. In addition to those 6 months of practise, we also spent an entire class choosing just the right source image and then manipulating that image using various filters to get just the right sort of vibe that she was after. THEN our hard-working student came to class with no less than 8 printed images showing us various filters and colour ways, including black and white images. As well as images of other artist's work to keep her inspired. FINALLY, we got it all to scale, cropped up all nice before we began so that our drawing is (almost) effortless. The next skill set our student will be learning? Applied colour theory and the importance of value and temperature! The destination is the finished piece on the wall that has you feeling chuffed... But it's the journey that keeps you coming back for more, and it's the journey we're here for baby, yeah!!! If you're after a one-night stand, we're not the art school for you. BUT if you want a real, committed, sunday kinda love, then we have got you! In classes or workshops we'll teach you everything we know, about everything we know. Drawing, portraiture, and colour theory workshops are coming up AND we've got limited spots in our weekly classes.... Seascapes, cityscapes, treescapes, flowers, portraits, and boats. Just a regular class! We don't work in terms or set skill sets. Instead, we just keep it nice and open and have each person working on their own piece at their own pace. It keeps it fresh, exciting and means there's always something fun going on! That includes beginners or people that can draw but aren't sure how to fix and critique their image.
