Not a very exciting photo is it????
It's a bit bland, yeah?

It may be bland, but what you're seeing here is a fantastic way to critique your image and your painting for the most important information around... VALUES!

First, a recap on values:
- These are THE King on your canvas. Yep, you heard right. Colour comes second to values every damn time.
- Values refer to how much light is hitting your object/ scene. Or, of course, how little light is present.
- Values are easiest to see in grey-scale or anything monochromatic. Another trick is putting a sheet of red cellophane or acetate over your image.

Pic 3) Painting without filter.

By putting our image into grey-scale we get to see with a bit more clarity, which places are dark, which places are light, and which places just kind of blend into each other.

By doing the same with our painting, we can then check what sort of information we've carried over correctly, and what bits we'll need to continue working on.

It's a fantastic way to get out of your head if you're uncertain about what to do next. Instead, just pop a filter on, do some critique and go for it!

Student Jo has been on a wild ride with this giant piece, but we're starting to get to a place where we can see what's happening... Or rather, we're getting to a place where Jo can see what's happening, and there's a bit of nuance in that sentence!

More than anything, here at Arts Tree, we want our students to find THEIR voices, make THEIR own decisions, and to work in ways that make sense to THEIR creative souls.... Otherwise we're not really teaching so much as dictating. And whilst the idea of having complete control over others is tempting... It never seems to work out that well!

So whilst Ali got Jo started in the usual Arts Tree fashion of BAM/ KAPOW paint action, see pic 3, Jo needed something else.
To slow down.
To sketch and find boundaries and calmness amongst the chaos of creativity.
And if you keep on sliding through the images, you'll see that journey for yourself!

Between Ali's knowledge of acrylic paint and mediums, and Jo's love of order and precision, together they've created a piece that works for the student, and taught the entire class a new way of working... And what could be better than that???

Colour... as mentioned previously is an extraordinarily BIIIIIG topic, which far too many of us don't fully understand.
But trust us, if you take the time to understand the nuance of colour it WILL make your painting experience a whole lot more enjoyable!

A really big, really annoying part of colour theory is colour relativity which explores the shifting nature of colour depending on what it's beside.

HUH?

That's right, colour shifts ON YOUR CANVAS depending on what other colours are immediately beside it, and the relationships that exist between the elements of that colour and the colour you're applying...

For instance... Check out our slides we've prepared for you... All of them have exactly the same coloured dots on them, the only thing that's changed is the background.
Notice how much the colour of the dots change depending on the background?

They seem lighter and brighter on the black because black is so dang dark.
They seem darker and more dull on the white because of the brightness of that background.
They damn well disappear on the green because the background and the colours are very similar in value.
The red seems to warm them up, and the blue appears to cool them down.

But they're all the same on each slide!
That's colour relativity.

Just because something looks right on your palette doesn't mean it will look right on the canvas... And 9 times out of 10, if you want something to look bright, you need to put more dark stuff around it.

A few weeks ago @degillettcox hosted a workshop and here's the results of two of our students who provided us with endless energy and enthusiasm across the weekend.

Mother/ daughter team Di and Diane worked alongside our own mother/ daughter team Ali and De to create these beautiful works from our 2nd 'Big Trees, Little Trees' workshop!

Although there's more than 3 steps involved, what you have here are 3 pictures from each of our artists taking your from the colour rub stage, all the way through to where we finished up...
And if you're not impressed, we honestly don't know what to do with you!

Glazing... What is it? Essentially, to glaze a pa

Glazing... What is it?

Essentially, to glaze a part of your painting is to paint a thin, transparent layer over a previous layer that has completely dried.

When using acrylics you'll want to use a glazing medium.
You CAN just water down your paint, but this would make your paint very weak and it will literally fall off your canvas.

Here at Arts Tree we use Jo Sonja's glazing medium because we love it! (pic 4)
It's dependable.
When it's dry, it's dry.
And it dries crystal clear with just a teeny bit of gloss to it.

But, why glaze?

Glaze is a fantastic way to add a POP of colour to your painting.
Also a fantastic way to build up some shadow.
Or maybe you want to influence a colour, make it a bit greener, or bluer, or redder?????
Either way, glaze is a treat!

How do you use it?
Add your acrylic paint to your glaze.
More paint = thicker glaze
Less paint = thinner, lighter glaze

And if you'd like a little sneak peek at what glaze can do to your colours, head over to pics 2 and 3 where we've created a little graphic for your ease.
Pic 2 shows a dioxazine purple, paynes grey, and red black glaze over pink, blue, red and yellow respectfully.
Pic 3 shows those new mixtures isolated.

So... That's glaze!

Our students amaze us, humble us, and remind us every damn day how essential having a good teacher is.

Hey beautiful art lovers!!!!
Did you know that we're an art school in Brisbane's Wynnum West?

Well... We are, and we're in our 12th year of business, wooohoooo!!!

We run 6 classes a week from Tuesday to Thursday, with spaces for 60 weekly students.
10 students a class.
All working on their own piece at their own pace.

Terms? NO! We're not about that life, we're just constantly churning out paintings and we'll teach you what you need to go, as you go.
Portrait? Cool, we'll teach you drawing, composition, colour mixing/ matching, and critique.
Landscape? Cool, we'll teach you drawing, composition, colour mixing/ matching, and critique.
Flowers? Cool.... You get the drift!

Most importantly, we are an ACRYLIC painting school.
That means acrylics only.
Oils take too long to dry, smell weird and are a bit fussy. We're not about it.
