It's official!
We're great!

While social media and Facebook have their wins, to be honest, most of our students come to us via word of mouth.
According to our students, we are the bee's knees!

Our students share their work and their experience with their people and before you know it, we've got another student who ends up painting with us for the next 3-7 years (which is how long most of our students have been with us!).

The best thing about doing something well is that it generates pride. And we're really proud of this little art school of ours!
We're proud of our students, the work they make, the lessons they learn, the way that we teach, and the ways our students continue to teach us.

It's a win/ win here at Arts Tree!

Art.
It'll get ya... doubting yourself, pulling your hair out and wondering how on earth you're going to pull it together! But pull it together we do, eventually...

Take this bloody excellent piece by student Karyn, finished pic right at the start here. It's stunning, sumptuous, vibrant, and dazzling (if we do say so ourselves!).

But it didn't start there... In fact, Karyn painted over the background around 4 times by the time she was done.
Because she didn't like what she had.
And isn't that awesome!?

What mistakes and things we don't like teach us is this: We don't need to be perfect ALL THE TIME.
They teach us how to persevere.
They teach us compassion, eventually.
They even teach us what's right... because a mistake is usually oh so obviously wrong. 🤮😂

Some paintings fly out of our paintbrushes in a rush. Others take time and hard work.
Neither is more worthy, and both are filled with the high that can only come from creativity!!!

We do have very select spots in our evening classes on Tuesday and Wednesdays, 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

A few weeks ago we talked about colour relativity

A few weeks ago we talked about colour relativity and we have a prime example to show you, courtesy of one of our tutors, Ali Gillett @brave__arts (what a gal!).
*Ali is also in charge of our social media so in effect is praising herself. What a legend!

She digresses 😉

Last week Ali was painting live with the good folks @artshed in West End.
Around 2 hours into her stint, her portrait was looking like this first picture. The background was all blues and purples, with the portrait subject slowly taking shape.

As you'll see in pic 2 however the background was changed to a warm yellow ochre.
Nothing else has changed.
Yet, do you notice how very different the two images look???

Pic 1 she looks mostly Caucasian, with a slightly bruised left arm, maybe a touch of sunburn... but she looks alright yeah?

In Pic 2 however you'll see she's basically a purple people eater. Dull, transparent, and very much in need of another layer of paint!

And that, sweet friends, is colour relativity!
When compared to cooler, more transparent tones, our lady looked warm and somewhat opaque. However when placed alongside a true warm and opaque colour, all of a sudden you could see the extra work that needed to be done.

Our canvas is a giant smorgasbord of relative options, shapes, colours, tones, and edges, all vying for attention and supremacy. Always, always keep an eye out for what sort of relationships you're building and you'll achieve a much more cohesive image hopefully, with a lot more ease!

Limiting your palette is one way to create room for play, exploration, and experimentation in your painting practice.
Who knew?!

The human eye can detect, apparently, up to 1 million colours... which is far more than what we need, or have room for on a single canvas!
The idea of limiting your palette allows us to get concise with what we can truly see and understand in the image in front of us... And forces us to utilise fewer materials in favour of fully exploring what they can offer us.

Take the famous Zorn portraiture palette, devised by Anders Zorn, in the late 1800's.
It's comprised of just 4 hues: Yellow ochre, vermillion, titanium white, and ivory black (which serves as a blue when mixed with white).
From these hues we get a truly stunning array of colours including greens, purples, pinks, and luscious browns...
Perfect for traditional portraiture!

The beauty of playing with limited palettes is that you get to know colour mixing really well.
And increasing skill sets is a fantastic way to generate trust in our creative capabilities.

More trust = more creation = more exploration = increased skill sets = more trust = more creation, etc.... You get the drift??!

The works in progress adorning our classroom walls are always fantastic to see as they come to life over weeks and sometimes months. They're a constant reminder that nothing truly worthwhile comes without perseverance, hard work, and endless mistakes.

When we say "Just keep going", what we mean is: exactly that.

Just keep going.
Put down a different colour, or maybe put down the brush and ponder a bit.
Refine the shape... or maybe even loosen it up?
Do another landscape, or maybe try a portrait.

Whatever you do, just keep going.
You're not a 'bad artist'. You're an artist on the never-ending journey toward knowledge.
Keep going.

Recently one of our students bought in a picture that was complex and hard to conceive of a beginning, middle, or an end.
But it had something.... so true to form we jumped in and gave it a shot!

You can see the whole process if you keep on swiping through...

Did we know where we were going to end up?
No.
Did we know what steps and processes and how long it would take?
No.
Did we know it would be a success?
No.

Did we do it anyway???
YES!

And that's the thing with art making. There are no insurance policies against failure and the way through isn't always clear. Which is why a weekly art class is so dang beneficial!
You get a person to bounce ideas off, to help guide the process, to blame when things go awry....😀👍👩‍🎨

Grounding our canvases, as we've mentioned once or

Grounding our canvases, as we've mentioned once or twice is usually the first step that happens in our personal painting practices, but also with every single canvas that comes into our classroom.

Essentially, grounding is a way to get started and cover up that plain white canvas, and there's MANY different ways to do it!

You could start with:
Pic 1) One solid colour that will help to unify your whole canvas. A lot of our household names like Monet and Cezanne would use a warm colour like burnt sienna, but you can literally use any colour you'd like!

Pic 2) A fade of colours that help to set the mood or introduce something special.

Pic 3) An informed colour rub, essentially drawing with transparent colour to create a colour map (of sorts).

Pic 4) A bit of mixed media. Gluing interesting patterns and textures onto your canvas.

Pic 5) A lot of mixed media!

Pic 6 & 7) Explosions of colour anywhere and everywhere you want!

A white canvas offers nothing special, it's perfect, plain, and reads as a giant slab of highlight. By covering that slab with something mid-toned, and maybe even a bit exciting and fun you're inviting the creative Gods to play with you!

Or at least that's the way we see it!

You're probably going to paint over most of this background so don't spend too much time deciding what to do... Get started and go from there, it's way more fun that way!
