WE ARE CLOSING.... Which is fun and scary and awe WE ARE CLOSING.... Which is fun and scary and awesome... but also sad. Because for 13 years we have been building a community of really cool, creative, authentic, kinda-crazy, and VERY fun individuals. For 13 years we've been surrounding ourselves with people who honestly make our world a better place, and now we are saying goodbye. BUT the world goes on and this means one thing: Our students will get to spread their wings and spread the love elsewhere, wooooohooooooooo!!!!! So: We need some recommendations. We are looking for art schools that are: Brisbane based, skills-focused, for adults, and that prioritise fun and frivolity!!! Is this your art school? Have you attended this art school? In 2022 our beautiful student Kim walked through t In 2022 our beautiful student Kim walked through the doors of Arts Tree ready to twist and turn her brains in new ways. This year, her painting is the catalogue cover for the 'Recovered Futures' exhibition!!! Held annually in Brisbane, this exhibition is a curated selection of works that speak to the complexity inherent at the intersection where mental health and creativity meet... An intersection where our artists frequently work! But Kim didn't start here. She has worked her way towards this jaw-dropping work through 3 years, countless hours, and many canvases.... Some of which we've shown here, because Kimbarella, we are so damn proud of you! Here's the take-away for us: Keep painting. Keep making. Keep doing the things that light you up, that teach you, that make you question yourself. Follow that which transforms you. You never know what's on the other side. And Kim, thank you, not for your success (though we are so happy for that!), but for coming!!! Well well well, 2025, you have been a quick little Well well well, 2025, you have been a quick little beast haven't ya?! We are reeling over here at Arts Tree, it feels like just yesterday that we were planning out this year's workshops and here we here spruiking the last ones of the year... and the last one's forever! Yes folks we are closing our doors for good at the end of November so this is your reminder to soak up the good stuff that we deliver while you can. So, let's find out what is very cool about our upcoming colour workshops! - We focus on the practical stuff that we actually use in our own studios and in our classroom. The skills we rely on over and over and over again. Like how to mix the right colour, how to see the world as a series of inter-relating values, how to show form and perspective with ease. - We pride ourselves on teaching it all in a fun, engaging, and practical kinda way! There's no point in us holding a symposium and just talking about it all.... NO! We CREATE it with you! Which means you go home with the tools that YOU made, your notes, your way of understanding. - We go over and over and over all the information so that you've got it swiftly nailed into your beautiful brains. But it's not just us repeating ourselves ad infinitum, it's SHOWING you how what we're saying applies in multiple different situations. - And of course there's the passion, the fire, the excitement, the joy that we get while we pass on this practice-changing information!!! Over the years our students have painted a bird or Over the years our students have painted a bird or two so here's a few that we've loved! But how many paintings have we have really seen??? 13 years of trade. 44 weeks a year. 60 students a week. 6 weeks approximately for each painting.... That's literally THOUSANDS of freaking paintings maaaaannnnnn!!!!!!! Like over 5000 canvases. Wow wow wow wow. No wonder we need a break! One of our favourite pieces over the last few year One of our favourite pieces over the last few years was this mixed-media triptych painted by our student Prath.. This started out as an homage to Klimt, but it soon became clear to our student that as both a woman-of-colour, and a mother, she had a job to do in regard to populating her canvasses with women who form the global majority. While Klimt made beautiful works, his works are of a certain time, his concepts formed from a world that spoke to a different audience. By using Klimt as a starting point, our student was able to conceptually deepen her work, bringing it forward in time, putting her stamp on it, and thus transforming the reality imposed upon her audience. Prath used an image of Maya Angelou as a starting point for this remix, a woman whose prose and perspective continues to challenge and transform the cultural canon of blackness, womanhood, and the Other. We've been in business for 13 years now and my oh We've been in business for 13 years now and my oh my have we seen some canvases walk through our doors. And here are some first impressions of artists over the last few years and their first pieces that they painted with us.... All in various stages of process! THIS is where the gold is in attending a weekly class, the process and the progress, the layers, the tantrums, the set-backs, the triumphs..!!! It's all part-and-parcel of being creative and if you're doing it solo, like most things, it can get a bit lonely. WE ARE NOT OPEN FOR MUCH LONGER! 8 weeks before we shut our doors as they are forever. SO, this is the last call for artists wanting to join our classes until we finish up at the end of November. Last year Ali was living across the road from this Last year Ali was living across the road from this bit of graffiti and found it grating because of one reason.... The artist did NOT use colour theory, The colours aren't that wrong.... They're just a little bit off, but enough to stop the piece from existing in easy harmony. As Mitchell Albala says, "the world exists in perfect harmony, it is our job as painters to recreate that natural harmony". Even when we're talking about graffiti on the side of a building in our urban landscape, harmony can exist! But, ya gotta know colour theory in order to do it! We love teaching this stuff because it is one way to avoid creating a giant mess on your canvas. It won't completely fool proof our work from mistakes, DON'T GET US WRONG, but it does cut down on the process of wondering "what the hell is happening???!!!". If you are a painter and you're not using a colour wheel consciously, and on every canvas you are either: a) Decades into your practice and have one tattooed on your brain b) Letting your lack of knowledge make decisions for you. THOSE ARE THE OPTIONS!!!! So, if you aren't decades into your practice with that brain tattoo, then come to our gosh darn workshops coming up in October! Sometimes surgery needs to happen. Sometimes hand Sometimes surgery needs to happen. Sometimes hands, heads, and faces need to be clawed off, painted over and started again... Why? Because they're wrong!!! Take this little bubba hand reaching for some crumbs. Cute right? NO!!! WEIRD. Fingers are waaaaaay too long! Tentacles instead of fingers, truly. And the thing is, our tutor @brave__arts was painting this little hand, convinced that the error lay in the colour or values. The next morning however, the problem was obvious, the drawing was off. An easy fix provided you have the courage to: - Admit there's' a mistake - Critique accurately and, - Perform the necessary surgery! Keep on swiping and you'll see what she ended up with and we think you'll agree, MUCH better!!! With foundational skills like critique, drawing analysis, and colour theory, the creative world is your oyster, don't bypass these skills! Skills = Freedom! We have just 2 last foundational workshops left until we close forever, so make bloody sure you get in while you can! When your work is in-progress are you able to enjo When your work is in-progress are you able to enjoy it? Are you able to step back and say "it's not perfect, but I can see it"? Those small moments of acceptance for where your painting is, the acknowledgement of growth from where it was, and the hope it will continue to improve are monumental!!! The cool thing is, if you can do it for your canvas, you can do it for yourself. By appreciating our process every step of the way and holding it for what it is, we get to practice what therapists have been trying to teach for decades; compassion, mindfulness, acceptance, growth. AND you get a cool painting at the end! It's a win win baby! These are works-in-progress from some of our weekly students and we hope you too can appreciate them for what they are, and come back in a few weeks to see what they'll become!
