OK!!!!! It is time to start spruiking our next wor OK!!!!!
It is time to start spruiking our next workshops coming up and gang, we've got another round of core, foundational skills that no creative can or should live without!

Your tutor @brave__arts has spread the knowledge across 2 days and 2 stand-alone workshops:
October 18: Colour Wheels Basics
October 19: Applied Colour Theory

So what will you learn on October 18???

HOW TO USE A COLOUR WHEEL!
Well, and how to paint one or two!

There is a wealth of knowledge in the colour wheel, but we're not often taught how to use that baby, but it is ALWAYS a part of the conversation in our classroom.
While having a loose little play around with colour is all well and good, if your colour scheme is off, your painting will tell you!

But you won't just learn about colour schemes... You'll learn about tints, tones, shades, and hues.
How to use them, mix them, and what to expect from them when you apply them to your canvas.

You'll learn about colour temperature and how that effects the colours available to you.
And perhaps most importantly, you'll learn how to mix colours!
A truly helpful skill that not only cuts down the cost of being a painter but also helps you to make more intelligent colour choices.

If you've seen a colour wheel around but never really understood it's value then believe us when we say, YOU NEED THIS WORKSHOP!

Saturday, Oct 18, $275 (most materials supplied)
Arts Tree, Wynnum West

Tickets and free info packs via our website, artstree.com.au > SHOP > Workshops

We help with everything!
From working out where each student wants to head creatively, to helping with drawing, colour mixing and everything in between!

The only spaces we have available are in our Wednesday and Thursday night classes, 6:30-8:30 pm.... But we've got around 7 spaces between them, woohooooooo!!!

If YOU would like one of those spaces to help bring your artistic dreams to life then give us a call or a text on 0437 146 359

Colour Theory is a BIG topic... So if you've been Colour Theory is a BIG topic... So if you've been finding it hard to know where to start, WE GET IT!!

Which is why we've got two big, beautiful workshops coming up in October that will provide you with everything you need to get started quite confidently on your colour journey.

Colour Wheel Basics
October 18
$275

This workshop is for anyone who has seen a colour wheel but has no idea what to do with it.
We will be making our own colour wheels while also getting to know when to use colour theory, how to use it and why it might be important.

Applied Colour Theory
October 19
$275

The very next day we have the next round of information; how do we use all that theory in an actual image?
We'll be learning about how important values are, how we use them to create form, and how our use of colour can change the mood and feel of our paintings.

These workshops have been developed and re-worked by our tutor @brave__arts after every single time we host them.... And now, 7 years in, we know we've got something worth shouting about!

These will be the last two workshops for 2025 and maybe even forever, so make sure you get involved while you can!

Tickets are always available via our website at artstree.com.au > Shop > Workshops

Got questions?
Stick them in the comments and we'll get back to you!

This is one of our newer student's second painting This is one of our newer student's second painting... and it's still a work in progress, but isn't she popping!!!?

That brilliant magenta against that deep blue sky!
The folds of the petals slowly coming into focus....
The centre of the flower, deep and dark yet with all that trapped light...

It's all coming together!

If you take a swipe through you'll see the painting deconstructed all the way back to our first steps.

1) To capture some of the fun, yet nearly invisible textures of the petals we began with a layer of texture paste, utilising piping bags and brayer rollers.

2) That first step was so that we could capture the glow and transparency of the flower using a colour-rub and transparent colours.

3) Here we introduced the opacity of that blue sky which shines in sharp contrast to the glow of the colour-rub. We also introduced glazing and values to begin to create form.

4) Which brings us back to our beginning image, where we continue that process of pushing and pulling more or less light into the image, getting more nuanced and precise as we go!

The layered process of working may be confusing and may require a lot of trust in the process, but isn't it fun?!
Well, and maybe anxiety provoking BUT that's why we have our foundational skills... Knowing how to use colour means you can be bold with it!

Our students often share that they would love to work with our confidence, and the thing is they can! And so can you:
Learn the skills, and then practise them relentlessly!

And we have workshops to help you out!!!

If colour that pops has been elusive for you, if finding form has been inconsistent, and if light continues to prove too hard to capture, our colour theory workshops are for you.

Two workshops, two days, a mind-blowing amount of material!

Just visit our website and head to the SHOP to get yourself a seat!

A weekly round-up of student works-in-progress to A weekly round-up of student works-in-progress to share!

We are an acrylic-based art school here for adults and adults only!!
We love being able to reignite the creative fire in our people and we LIKE IT HOT!!

What we mean by that is that it is our student's fire that must be ignited.... And we do that through working with the class as individuals. Rather than working in set terms or skill sets, we simply ask our students to choose an image that THEY want to create.

Then we meet them there, right where they are and teach them the next level.

Some of our students literally don't know what they want to paint, or how to find images.
Some don't know how to draw.
Others don't know how to mix colours.
Some get lost in the driveway.

WHEREVER THEY ARE, WE'LL BE!!!

In this lot we've got experienced painters trusting their own vision, and new artists getting used to existing in the world again.
We've got mothers and daughters spending time together, while other mothers are spending some time away from it all.
We've got artists confronting their lot in life, and others finding more magic in every layer.

And through it all, we paint!
We draw!
We analyse!
We critique, we correct, we celebrate and move on!

We do, also, have some very limited spots in our weekly classes.
So if you'd like to see what sort of creative fire burns in you, give us a call and we'll see if we can fit you in!
No promises on those class availabilities, best to call and check 0437 146 359

When we were kids, we had fun with our creativity. When we were kids, we had fun with our creativity. And somewhere along the way, we generally, lost it. We forgot that we had free will to paint whatever the hell we want.

You see it in the classroom all the time.
People think they have to match the images on the wall to the colour of the couch.
People think that frames should be white, black, wrap-around, or wooden.
People think that the only options are landscapes, portraits, or flowers.

BUT we have FREE WILL.

You know what that means?

YOU CAN PAINT WHATEVER YOU WANT.

You can paint people with lego hands and eyeballs made out of fish-guts.
You can paint wars fought by mermaids and centaurs.
You can paint your favourite ice-cream melting in the sun.
You can paint odes to bands you love.
You can paint any coloured frame you want.
You can paint fluorescent women, and alien landscapes and none of it matters!!

We have free will to create the world we want to create, at least in our creative practice.
But it's interesting how often the 'big sensible adult' literally can-not handle such freedom. We tense up in the face of it and every past failure rears it's head to remind us to "play it safe".

Don't.
Don't play it safe.
Safe is stagnant when it comes to the studio. And stagnant stinks.

Free up. Let your inner 6 year old loose and see what they come up with. Exercise that free will and prove to yourself that you still have it!

Better yet, do it while you're running under the sprinklers in your favourite undies, screaming like the joy-filled banshee you used to be!🀣🌈πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒπŸ’ƒπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ€ŒπŸ€ŒπŸ€Œ

How does one turn this image into a painting???? O How does one turn this image into a painting????
Our tutor @brave__arts aka Ali Gillett does it in the following steps:

1) Choose image taken by @earthsworld. Screen shot, crop and grid.

2) Go freakin wild on your canvas. Stop all thought. Nothing matters. Colours gross? Good.

3) Grid up and begin the sketch. Keep it loose but as correct as you can make it without getting all tense and perfection-y.

4) Values. Dark ones.
How dark? Darker than the background.
What dark? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ A dark?

5) Repeat for light values and chuck the mask on.

6) Some skin flavour + colour vomit.
What is colour vomit?
Great question, we don't know either.

7) Fix your mistakes at each step, Chuck on some more lights and darks.
If something is not grabbing your attention LEAVE IT TF ALONE!!!

8) Try something in the background. Hate it.

9) Try something else. Still hate it.
Continue to hate it as you perfect the rest of it.

10) Chuck an outline around it. Begin to like it.
Add some other stuff that's questionable but feels good/ makes you laugh.

11) Walk away. Your work here is done.

If any of that sounds like an approach to the delicate art of portraiture that you would like to investigate further then you should get a ticket to our workshop before the tickets sell out!

We've got 3 tickets left and would love to have you!!!

We've got a link in our bio or you can head to the website artstree.com.au > SHOP > Workshops to buy one for you!

Have you noticed how beautiful it is? This world Have you noticed how beautiful it is?

This world we live in?

Have you noticed the colour of the shadows and how they shift? Have you noticed how filled with miracles a single tomato is?

Have you stopped and been swept up by nostalgia and romance?
Has a scene appeared in front of you as though by a set-designer... so perfectly capturing a feeling it's hard to believe it exists without a script to guide it?

Have you laughed at the absurdity of something? The sheer madness of a scene in front of you?
Have you wondered who wrote this great cosmic joke that tickles you so?
Have you cried, or wondered, or been lost in the softness of death? At how it can creep and take from us whilst leaving behind beautiful remnants of the life we had just days ago?

Have you ever walked into a backyard and seen a goon bag on the clothesline and marvelled at the variety of light and reflections captured on it's surface?

Have you ever looked at all of this and been paralysed by the concept of time and space, and wine in silver bags and beauty and the cosmos and the fact that we're here for any of it?????

Did you know that you can be inspired by all of it? Did you know that you can paint all of it?
Did you know?
