We teach you everything we know about everything we know.
Acrylics. Technique. Party. Tutors: @degillettcox @brave__arts

There are many different ways to utilise colour in There are many different ways to utilise colour in a painting... So always remember to have fun while you're doing it!

While you're having fun however, remember that you don't need to reinvent colour theory, it's already there, nice and handy for us to use.

Need to sink something further back in your canvas?
TONE it down.
COOL it down.
Take the red and yellow out.
Keep your tonal variances nice and tight.

And the above is, of course, in reference to the foreground and midground.
Toned in comparison to the area in front of it.
Cooled in comparison to the area in front of it.
Less red and yellow than.... YOU GET THE DRIFT??

The thing is... if you DON'T get the drift that's simply because you haven't learnt about colour theory yet!

By getting curious about the world we can observe with our own two eyes we can create beautiful, believable, surreal or picture perfect paintings... The choice is ours!

If you're finding it hard to work out colour, we've got workshops for that!!
In fact, they'll be our last workshops of the year and the last workshops held at Arts Tree as it is... So make sure you come along!

Tickets via artstree.com.au > SHOP > Workshops or go to the link in our bio xxx

Learning how to paint isn't about how to be perfec Learning how to paint isn't about how to be perfect.

No, no no...

It's about how to tolerate and work through the many occasions in which your painting is decidedly NOT perfect.

Which is very much what our students learnt during our recent 'Colourful Portraits' workshop with our tutor @brave__arts

This style of working features a step called 'colour vomit', which isn't very romantic but it get's the point across... It's about not-thinking, its about letting mistakes roll all over your canvas. It's about not-thinking, and simply doing.

WHY????

Because friends, there are many, many ways and layers that we can use to help us toward perfect, but if we don't leave any space for simply existing, then how the hell will THE MAGIC get in?

And of course, with a tutor holding your hand who understands colour theory, and trusts her ability to analyse and correct mistakes, how bad can it be???

While these paintings aren't quite finished, our students (most of whom were painting their 1st portrait) have walked away with the skills they need to keep going, AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT!

We've got colour theory workshops coming up, so if freedom from perfectionism is what you're needing, then man, have we got you!!!

Check it all out at artstree.com.au

And a HUGE THANKYOU to our students who make every single one of our days a bit more colourful!

Two days. Two workshops. An absolute truckload of Two days.
Two workshops.
An absolute truckload of colour knowledge!

Colour, much like drawing, or the various ways to use a paintbrush, is a FOUNDATIONAL tool.

Have you ever tried to build a house without a foundation?
Probably not, and for good reason! Without a strong foundation (even if it's simply packed earth), the rest of your house will crumble.

When it comes to art making, without foundational skills your practice will stall. It will become trapped and stagnant, unable to grow and change because YOU are unable to grow and change.

The foundations give our walls the structure and stability they need to hold up the roof. Likewise, in the studio, our foundations give us the courage we need to keep building.

The very cool thing is that colour theory is a skill!!!
It can be learnt, and it's not that hard.
While what we teach you is a bit more in-depth than what your primary or high school teacher was able to fit in, it's easy to digest and designed for beginners to understand.

If colour theory is pretty much an unknown to you, we HIGHLY recommend you at least come to Colour Wheel Basics on Oct 18.

If you kind of understand the wheel but don't get how it helps you to paint an image, come to Applied Colour Theory on Oct 19.

But ideally, come to both!!

Tickets and information packs at the usual spot on artstree.com.au > SHOP > Workshops

And keep in mind, this is our last year for workshops like this, so snap it up!!

A weekly roundup of our student's work in progress A weekly roundup of our student's work in progress!

We have up to 10 students in each class, everyone working on their own thing at their own pace...
And we come in and teach them the skill set that's missing.
Or maybe we suggest a few alternative processes.
Or... We might wipe it off and start again, because sometimes we need to do that!

The biggest thing in our classes is the community. It's full, vibrant, encouraging, and often hilarious. Music is vibing, art is flowing, things are being learnt, it's a treat!

We've got limited spots available but if you're keen on a class we've got space in Wednesday and Thursday nights.
Give us a call on 0437 146 359 if you'd like some more info, or head to the website artstree.com.au.

1 day, 5 hours, An absolute truck-load of informat 1 day, 5 hours, An absolute truck-load of information designed to make the BIG world of colour just a little more known!

This Sunday workshop (Oct 19), carries over from Saturday's introduction to the colour wheel (Oct 18), and focuses on what actually happens once we start putting colour on our canvas.

Because colour... is magic, we're creating illusions all over our canvas!!
Learning the theory of applying colour is like going to Harry Potter's school for Wizards.
You need to learn all about the ingredients if you want to cast the right spell!

In this one day workshop you'll be learning how to apply colour theory to create the illusions of depth, form and distance.
Values
Colour relativity
Colour temperature
Saturation
Glow

This is pretty bloody cool and easy stuff, and it will make a HUGE difference to the flow of your colour choices when you're back in the studio.
You won't need to guess so much, because you'll know what to do!

If all of that sounds at the very least, interesting, then head on over to our website and buy yourself a ticket!

SOURCE IMAGES!!! There remains a rumour that you SOURCE IMAGES!!!

There remains a rumour that you shouldn't use source images to draw, paint or create from.

And that MAY be true.... for Artists that don't want to create correctly or learn how to represent their subjects truthfully.

It may also be true for artists that are painting in front of a live scene or model OR those that have 6 decades of practice under their belt.

But for everyone else, USE A BLOODY SOURCE IMAGE!!
Our students find inspiration everywhere, from magazine covers, holidays, people at the supermarket, facebook pages...
We just ask that it's printed.

The thing with a PRINTED source image is that we can use it to teach you drawing analysis.
We can use it to help us mix the right colours.
And we can use another artist's way of working to inform our own practice!
(As long as you're not selling it, learning from another artist is not a problem.)

Source images allow us to get stuck in the nitty gritty of form and colour. They teach us about tonal variance and they allow us to experiment BOLDLY!
Because the image is always there to reign us in, to correct us, to bring us back to the truth of what we're representing.

How can you correct and learn from something that's never wrong because you just made it all up?

The hot take away???? Print out your images and use that to paint from!
The end!

Making art can be a tough little balance beam. On Making art can be a tough little balance beam.
On one hand we'll shout at our students, "there's no such thing as perfect!", "Let's make some mistakes!", and "Get started, then make it better"...

While on the other hand we'll also instruct our students to:
- Critique and correct at each step
- Wash a layer off if they know they can do better
- Analyse the way they're holding the brush, and fix what isn't working!

It's about balance!!!
And here's a few examples of how we roll:

1) We grounded with turquoise and sketched fairly loosely and now we're really focusing on constructing form using precise brushstrokes and values.

2) We've grounded our canvas very loosely with pinks and browns just to have a bit of fun.
Then we got very precise with our drawing, making sure that it's something we can trust. Next step, loosen up a bit with the next round of colours.

3) Next, we swapped that process around a bit. Very loose sketch followed by a very controlled grounding that enabled us to do 4 things at once; find darks, find lights, add vibrancy, allow for magic. This piece has then had some very loose lights placed on top.

These are all examples of how little bits of focus will get you to where you're going. It's not about every step being perfect, it's about balancing our quest for perfect with a little bit of play, mess, and making mistakes!

We can't make a piece without making mistakes so why even try? We want to encourage our students to get comfortable with the mistakes, and get comfortable on the balance beam so that they'll know what to do next: Is it a time for focus or play?
Is it a time for correction, or execution?

If you feel like you need help with your own little creative balance beam then why not join in with our weekly classes!

We've got spots in our Wednesday and Thursday night classes: 6:30-8:30pm, $160 per month.
Give us a call on 0437 146 359 if you'd like to sign up!

Works in progress off the walls of our classroom i Works in progress off the walls of our classroom in Wynnum West!

We've got a student playing with Van Gogh's mark-making, while re-imagining some poppies.
We've got a student intent on loosening up, while others tighten up through portraiture.
A student flying through some twilight clouds and letting her spirit free!
We've got portraits and people and horse, oh my!

We never get sick of the variety here at Arts Tree, we bloody love it!!!

And while we do have some spots available in our weekly classes, they are limited!!

We are closing at the end of this year so now is the time to fit into one of our workshops or weekly classes.

OK!!!!! It is time to start spruiking our next wor OK!!!!!
It is time to start spruiking our next workshops coming up and gang, we've got another round of core, foundational skills that no creative can or should live without!

Your tutor @brave__arts has spread the knowledge across 2 days and 2 stand-alone workshops:
October 18: Colour Wheels Basics
October 19: Applied Colour Theory

So what will you learn on October 18???

HOW TO USE A COLOUR WHEEL!
Well, and how to paint one or two!

There is a wealth of knowledge in the colour wheel, but we're not often taught how to use that baby, but it is ALWAYS a part of the conversation in our classroom.
While having a loose little play around with colour is all well and good, if your colour scheme is off, your painting will tell you!

But you won't just learn about colour schemes... You'll learn about tints, tones, shades, and hues.
How to use them, mix them, and what to expect from them when you apply them to your canvas.

You'll learn about colour temperature and how that effects the colours available to you.
And perhaps most importantly, you'll learn how to mix colours!
A truly helpful skill that not only cuts down the cost of being a painter but also helps you to make more intelligent colour choices.

If you've seen a colour wheel around but never really understood it's value then believe us when we say, YOU NEED THIS WORKSHOP!

Saturday, Oct 18, $275 (most materials supplied)
