Who are you? What do you like? What do you want to

Who are you?
What do you like?
What do you want to create?
How do you want to spend your time?
What excites, invigorates, and inspires you?
Why do you like those things?
How will you talk about them?

These are the questions that a creative practice will ask of us at one point or another, and it's these questions that our students tend to find the most confronting.

After years and decades of looking after other people, careers, houses, and pets, the answers to these questions are sometimes blank stares and 'I don't know'.
Followed, maybe by shame, doubt, fear, and uncertainty.

All of which are perfectly fine, and are just another unexpected hurdle of creativity... It forces us to reckon with ourselves, to inquire, investigate, and get curious about who we are, in one way or another!

So here's a little cheat sheet that our tutor @brave__arts made up to help you on your way as you get curious about the human being you find yourself to be.
This is what she does in her own practice to get out of ruts, find some inspiring images and get painting in her studio.

All pictures in the last slide painted by her, for no other reason than she likes the pictures.
And none are, or ever will be for sale... Because your hobby doesn't have to be about a side hustle (!).

If you're finding your creative practice a bit sticky and burdensome maybe sit down and give it a go... or, you can always sign up for some classes!

Have you ever found yourself breathless over a well-painted bit of values???

We do.
ALL the time.

Because values are what create form... Without them our paintings just look like flat splodges.

And a well-painted value pays attention not just to the depth or lightness of the value but also to it's shifting qualities as the light moves over the subject matter... Because that's all we're ever painting of course!
Light, what it touches, what it doesn't, and how the material it's touching responds to that light.

And you'll see here that one of our students (the one obsessed with Barbie) has created a series of really delectable folds in the fabric of this mixed-media piece by paying loving attention to the values within!

Don't forget to breathe!

Back in May we hosted a 'Rocks and Rivers' worksho

Back in May we hosted a 'Rocks and Rivers' workshop with the great @degillettcox ... and quite a few of those students are also weekly students who work with us every week!
How lucky are we!

Here are two, now complete works by two of those students....

Just to reiterate, these have been worked on now since mid-May, nearly 2 months of little touches here and there and considerable painting advice from their teacher.

Great art VERY RARELY happens in one big bolt of energetic action. It usually takes weeks and months to pull it all together.

Have a swipe on through and go on the journey (backwards) from the glowing finished product you see in front of you to their rough and ready beginnings at the workshop.

AND if you would like to learn some of the tricks that these students get on a weekly basis, you should probably sign up for our very last workshop of the year with De in October. Very limited seats left!

Values are important in life aren't they? We use

Values are important in life aren't they?

We use them to guide us, even unconsciously, as we walk through life, both on and off the canvas....
But what the hell is a 'value' in regard to art making???

Specifically when we are talking about painting or drawing, a value is essentially how much light or dark is, or isn't hitting our object or scene.
What this does for us is create form, and perspective...

And we'll be working with it quite a lot in our Applied Colour Theory workshop on July 21 (this coming Sunday!).

Most of us believe that colour is king when it comes to creating beautiful, believable, and exciting images, yet colour comes secondary to value every step of the way!
In fact, you can choose some pretty crazy colours while still painting believable images by simply utilising the power of your values.

We teach weekly art classes here at Arts Tree, but did you know we also do monthly workshops???

We've got single-day skill-builders that focus on a specific tool to add to your art making kit, as well as two-day extravaganzas where you can learn how to paint in the style of your tutor.

Learn how to ACTUALLY use a colour wheel! There's a lot of knowledge in the humble wheel and it's much more than what we learnt in our high school art classes... Paint your own wheels, learn colour mixing, and play with colour schemes.

Well, maybe not ONLY at Arts Tree but we will definitely be teaching it to you while you're with us!!

So what is it that we're teaching to you today? The wisdom to be found in PRINTING out your source images!

Swipe through the slides above and you'll see how hard we tried to coach our student through drawing their FIRST EVER portrait without a printed image.
We did an OK job, but it wasn't a great portrait by any means. It was flat, absent of emotion and movement, and failed to capture the sensual pose we were searching for.
Why?
Because we only had the image on our student's phone, and that simply isn't useful for LEARNING how to draw:
- It's very hard to use analysis on such a small screen.
- It's hard to interact with your screen without it moving.

Which basically means it's hard to check what's right, and what's wrong, thus, you're drawing blindly and hoping for the best. A terrible way to learn!

Now swipe to slide 4 and you'll see what happened when we finally had a printed image to work from... And we think you'll agree, it looks about a million times better!

A printed image can be drawn all over, using rulers and pens without it bouncing around all over the screen. We can turn lips into the trapezoids that they are, eyes can become parallelograms, and everything can be lined up correctly BEFORE it's committed to the canvas!

TLDR: Print your source images before you start painting!

Skill building workshops are created by us here at Arts Tree in response to the things we find ourselves having to teach the most.

They're built around answering the questions we get asked the most with the information that packs the biggest punch. And we've got two, single day workshops coming up that we think will pack the biggest punch of all!

We don't really think we need to get into the science behind how the human eye works and perceives light and colour... Whilst it's FASCINATING, it really doesn't change how we paint a picture.

What DOES really matter is colour temperature and how we can use it to create not just perspective but mix the right colours with confidence and ease.

What matters is knowing how to get to know the full gamut of colours your tubes of paint can make and how to make the most of what they're offering (painting is an expensive hobby after all!).

What matters is utilising values as a priority OVER colour! Without value, nothing makes sense!

And, what the hell's a gamut anyway???

On slide 6 you will see a full breakdown of what we'll be teaching over the two days... PLEASE NOTE they are two separate workshops and we HIGHLY recommend you come along to both to be able to make full use of what's being taught!

That art takes time, patience, and many, many layers of experiments, guesses, and mistakes... But it's oh so worthy if you keep on going!
