We've got a few spots available in our weekly art classes here at Arts Tree that are just waiting for you to fill them!!
SO what should you expect from a weekly art class with us?

#1: Comfort zones (lol) just jokes.
You'll be getting out of that place real quick! We are not for the faint of heart, simply because we teach you all the skills you'll need to achieve big things! We will meet you where you are, but don't expect to stay there long.

#2: Acrylics baby yeah!
No watercolours or sculpture or pastels. We will be painting with acrylics. But don't worry, if you looooooove the soft sweepy look of a watercolour or the juicy thickness of an oil then we'll play around with mediums and techniques that will allow that to happen.

#3: Your piece, your pace.
We don't run in terms, and we're not teaching any one specific thing to every student. In each class there'll be up to 10 students all doing their own thing, to the level and pace that suits them. This means our classes are energetic, filled with 10 different voices, and our tutors are well-trained to hear and teach them all!

#4: A good time!
This one is no joke. Come to Arts Tree to make a mess and have a good time with your like-minded crew. The beautiful paintings you make are literally the least of it.
Mostly, you'll learn the value of a weekly creative practice and that my friends, is priceless.

And we're starting off with a doozy, a real mind-spinner and possibly one of the easiest ways to lift your painting practice...

Introducing... Negative Painting!!!
A staple of the work by our founder, De Gillett Cox.

But we can't expect ya'll to buy tickets to something you don't even understand so please swipe through the images and have a little learning moment.

And then, when your brain has soaked it in we would recommend you head on over to our website so that you can book yourself a sweet weekend where you'll be learning all about how to do it for yourself!

Each student will be working on their own painting from their own source image while our tutors, De and Ali, will be walking everyone through the steps, choices, and processes along the way.

Pro tip: If you're feeling a bit scared that you won't get it, but you'd be excited to be able to... You're our ideal student!

March 22 and 23, $500 for the weekend.

Back in 2020, after the spicy cough came and rocke

Back in 2020, after the spicy cough came and rocked our world... we hosted our first and kind of last Negative Painting workshop.

Why?
We're not sure...
Regardless, it's back baby!!!!!

Have a scroll through and you'll see what some of our students achieved across the weekend all those years ago.

But basically, negative painting is achieved through painting AROUND your object.

pics 2 & 3) The original background was all those reds and yellows that have since become leaves.
pic 4) The background was the colour you can see for those mangrove roots, we painted around them with opaque blue.
pic 5) The background was those deep blues that are now the shadows of people standing on a beach.

See how we've painted around the positive shape of our object, thus filling in the negative space????

Did you know you can repaint over old canvasses you don't care for anymore?
This student came to us last year and her very first piece was delightful... at the time.
However, new year new you and all of a sudden she just wasn't vibing it that much... See pic 2.

We have two options here:
1) Hold onto something we don't really like just because we painted it that one time. AND spend $$$ on a new canvas.
2) Paint over it and reuse that beautiful canvas!

Whilst we can feel attached to previous pieces we've created, they'll end up literally suffocating us if we don't get rid of them or recycle what we can.
Also, art is an expensive hobby, save where you can!

ONE THING: Take a photo before you paint over it!
Feeling pride over what we've created never goes out of fashion, so make sure you've got proof of all your good work while you keep on making new stuff.

Now, go for a walk around the house and plan some transformations!

One of the hardest part of any painting process is

One of the hardest part of any painting process is being able to see through the next layers, and trust that you'll be able to deal with whatever pops up.

We display all of student's works in progress around our classroom for two reasons;
1) We have to, it's a storage thing.
2) We ALL get to see the weird, wacky, and sometimes awful points along the way to a finished piece.

So, with this in mind, can you guess what this student is painting???
Hint:
It is a rather famous piece by a rather famous artist.

Have you ever tried creating your own unique image from collaged ideas?
That's exactly what one of our students is doing here... Creating a love canvas (is that a thing?) that captures just some of the greatness that the Beatles and Paul McCartney have brought into her life.

The composition is still being played with but we've got bits and pieces from all of her favourite albums, her fave picture of Paul himself and all sorts of meaningful trinkets thrown around.

Not surprisingly, this piece is taking longer to come to life than simply capturing the elegance of an already created image or scene... Which can be frustrating for new artists!

Frequently, while we may have an innate knowing of what we're after, actually creating that image can be mighty hard! Most often we come to the solution through endless renditions of what doesn't work... Just like Eddison, Ford, Davinci, and all the other great inventors that have lived on this earth.

Artists are scientists, make no mistake!
And that's why having an experienced tutor who has worked in those artistic trenches can be so dang beneficial... While we can't do the work for you, we can at least commiserate, encourage, and cry in frustration with you!
