When we were kids, we had fun with our creativity.

When we were kids, we had fun with our creativity. And somewhere along the way, we generally, lost it. We forgot that we had free will to paint whatever the hell we want.

You see it in the classroom all the time.
People think they have to match the images on the wall to the colour of the couch.
People think that frames should be white, black, wrap-around, or wooden.
People think that the only options are landscapes, portraits, or flowers.

BUT we have FREE WILL.

You know what that means?

YOU CAN PAINT WHATEVER YOU WANT.

You can paint people with lego hands and eyeballs made out of fish-guts.
You can paint wars fought by mermaids and centaurs.
You can paint your favourite ice-cream melting in the sun.
You can paint odes to bands you love.
You can paint any coloured frame you want.
You can paint fluorescent women, and alien landscapes and none of it matters!!

We have free will to create the world we want to create, at least in our creative practice.
But it's interesting how often the 'big sensible adult' literally can-not handle such freedom. We tense up in the face of it and every past failure rears it's head to remind us to "play it safe".

Don't.
Don't play it safe.
Safe is stagnant when it comes to the studio. And stagnant stinks.

Free up. Let your inner 6 year old loose and see what they come up with. Exercise that free will and prove to yourself that you still have it!

Better yet, do it while you're running under the sprinklers in your favourite undies, screaming like the joy-filled banshee you used to be!🤣🌈🥳🥳💃💃💃🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🤌🤌🤌

How does one turn this image into a painting????
Our tutor @brave__arts aka Ali Gillett does it in the following steps:

1) Choose image taken by @earthsworld. Screen shot, crop and grid.

2) Go freakin wild on your canvas. Stop all thought. Nothing matters. Colours gross? Good.

3) Grid up and begin the sketch. Keep it loose but as correct as you can make it without getting all tense and perfection-y.

4) Values. Dark ones.
How dark? Darker than the background.
What dark? 🤷‍♀️ A dark?

5) Repeat for light values and chuck the mask on.

6) Some skin flavour + colour vomit.
What is colour vomit?
Great question, we don't know either.

7) Fix your mistakes at each step, Chuck on some more lights and darks.
If something is not grabbing your attention LEAVE IT TF ALONE!!!

8) Try something in the background. Hate it.

9) Try something else. Still hate it.
Continue to hate it as you perfect the rest of it.

10) Chuck an outline around it. Begin to like it.
Add some other stuff that's questionable but feels good/ makes you laugh.

11) Walk away. Your work here is done.

Have you noticed how beautiful it is?

This world we live in?

Have you noticed the colour of the shadows and how they shift? Have you noticed how filled with miracles a single tomato is?

Have you stopped and been swept up by nostalgia and romance?
Has a scene appeared in front of you as though by a set-designer... so perfectly capturing a feeling it's hard to believe it exists without a script to guide it?

Have you laughed at the absurdity of something? The sheer madness of a scene in front of you?
Have you wondered who wrote this great cosmic joke that tickles you so?
Have you cried, or wondered, or been lost in the softness of death? At how it can creep and take from us whilst leaving behind beautiful remnants of the life we had just days ago?

Have you ever walked into a backyard and seen a goon bag on the clothesline and marvelled at the variety of light and reflections captured on it's surface?

Have you ever looked at all of this and been paralysed by the concept of time and space, and wine in silver bags and beauty and the cosmos and the fact that we're here for any of it?????

A few images of our feathered friends both past and current from the walls of the Arts Tree classroom!

Our students are, quite obviously, amazing.
And they never fail to amaze us with their wild and wonderful dreams that they'd next like to bring to life.

At Arts Tree, unlike most other art schools, we don't operate in terms. We just have an open format with each artist working on their own piece at their own pace.

This means we'll have a mixed media piece, alongside a more realistic piece, with a naïve style thrown in for fun! This keeps us on our creative toes as we bounce between students and ALWAYS having a good time, inspired by the MANY ways of making that exist.

Here's a few portraits painted over the last couple of years by our resident portrait artist and tutor, Ali Gillett @brave__arts ...

What does Ali love about portraits?

They're straightforward, either right or wrong.
And while that can mean that there's a lot of mistakes to correct along the way, this rigidity makes Ali feel free to play around in all the other ways!

What other ways????

With brushstroke and colour, and subject matter!
Why get caught up in 'correct' skin tone when you can have a blast and paint whatever you want?

Why get all tight and tiny and perfect with your brushstrokes when you can be loose and messy and raw???

Why paint 'serious' when you get a bit weird?
Isn't that the point?

At Arts Tree we believe that artists are meant to play. We advocate for a world of artists having a rollicking good time and not getting too caught up in the stuff that non-creatives care about!

For probably the last time here at Arts Tree, Ali will be hosting her very popular, very excellent drawing and portraiture workshops here at Arts Tree in July and August respectively.

Saturday July 26th; Learn to draw.
You're not meant to just 'know' how to draw. It's a skill set, like carpentry.
There are tools to learn, and years of practise before you go calling yourself a master tradie, but this is where we start!

Weekend of August 16 and 17; Colourful Portraits
Come and play around with getting brave and punchy with your portraits.

Beginners are welcome and encouraged to both workshops... If you think you're "the worst artist ever" come and show us just how bad you really are!

There seems to be a trend towards 'efficiency in a

There seems to be a trend towards 'efficiency in art'... A compulsion to just get to the end when it's all perfect and awesome.

But the thing is, if that were the true aim, we would never make more than one painting. If it were about the destination, then we would stop.

So it mustn't be about the destination, it MUST be the journey that keeps us hooked.

Take this portrait, drawing through to the first layers of colour (seen in pic 4) in ONE class....

EXCEPT it wasn't one class.

Because this is the student's third painting with us, so she's been practising her drawing since February... Ditto for colour mixing, experimentation with mediums, and tool technique.

In addition to those 6 months of practise, we also spent an entire class choosing just the right source image and then manipulating that image using various filters to get just the right sort of vibe that she was after.

THEN our hard-working student came to class with no less than 8 printed images showing us various filters and colour ways, including black and white images.
As well as images of other artist's work to keep her inspired.

FINALLY, we got it all to scale, cropped up all nice before we began so that our drawing is (almost) effortless. The next skill set our student will be learning?
Applied colour theory and the importance of value and temperature!

The destination is the finished piece on the wall that has you feeling chuffed... But it's the journey that keeps you coming back for more, and it's the journey we're here for baby, yeah!!!

If you're after a one-night stand, we're not the art school for you. BUT if you want a real, committed, sunday kinda love, then we have got you!

In classes or workshops we'll teach you everything we know, about everything we know.
Drawing, portraiture, and colour theory workshops are coming up AND we've got limited spots in our weekly classes....

SO stop worrying about the destination and just get in the gosh darn car!!!
