We teach you everything we know about everything we know.
Acrylics. Technique. Party. Tutors: @degillettcox @brave__arts

Most of the frustrated artists we meet seem to hav Most of the frustrated artists we meet seem to have a belief that they should just *be able* to draw really, really, well.
Without effort, training, or practise.

Many of those same artists decide that they're going to stick to "more abstract" ways of working to make up for this lack.

There's two ways we feel about this:
๐Ÿคฎ&๐Ÿคฃ.

The thing is, we get it. Because we had THE SAME belief! We'd been through high-school art classes, and even university... We had proof of many, many drawings stored all around our homes. BUT they were accidents.
Happy accidents that happened to look good, but we didn't know how we got there, how to correct the wrong bits, or how to do them again.

ENTER DRAWING ANALAYSIS!!!

This is a tool set of 9 different ways to analyse the image or scene you're drawing, as you draw it, to give you a dependable drawing that you can trust!

And THAT"S the thing!

TRUST!

If you're going to trust the process and have a good time making your art, you have to trust something.... And you could simply trust yourself... we guess... But like, why not just learn a freaking skill that will do it FOR you???

LEARN TO DRAW
LEARN TO DRAW
LEARN TO DRAW
IT'S REALLY NOT THAT HARD!

Ali has been teaching this one for 6 years, to around 300 people. So why not join the Alumni??

Throw your questions in the comments, and throw your money at the website... Go buy yourself a ticket and set your self freeee!!!

Are you one of those people who thinks they CAN'T Are you one of those people who thinks they CAN'T DRAW???

EVERY single time Mum and I are out and about and introduce ourselves as artists we get this, "Oh, I would love to make art but I just can't draw!"

LOL we say, shortly followed by "If we only had a dollar..."

Because if we did have a dollar each time someone said this to us we would be able to bloody retire yesterday!

You would be amazed how many people let their lack of drawing skills stand in their way, in fact you might even be one of them.
Squandering your art- making years and tightening your circle of inspiration because you're CERTAIN that you simply can't draw.

The thing is, if you don't know what the following words mean in regard to drawing, then you literally have never been taught:
- Thrust
- Vector of analysis
- Pivot points
- Repeated motif

How did you go? Do you know what any of them mean in relation to drawing?
Yes? Great.
No? Even better!!!! Enrol in our drawing workshop we've got coming up in July!

Your lack of drawing skills are holding back your creative practice. You can pretend this doesn't matter and continue to draw munted hands, weird looking faces, or maybe just go 'abstract'.....
OR
You can step into the scary world of a brand new skill that will unlock unknown powers and likely propel you into a magical land of self-belief.

This workshop is for people who think they "can't draw". You will be working alongside our tutor superstar, Ali @brave__arts , who will teach you fundamental drawing skills, critiquing skills, and maybe even sing you a song or two.
The singing will be sub-par, the teaching will be excellent.

This workshop has been taught to 14 year olds, 96 year olds, and everyone in between. So please, if you're thinking that YOU ALONE are a 'bad' drawer, come along and let us blow your gosh darn mind!

Tickets via artstree.com.au > Shop> Workshops or via the link in our bio!

We used to use green to paint leaves. We really d We used to use green to paint leaves.

We really did.
And while they still might look green, to be honest, those greens have changed a lot.

Why?

Because we paid attention to the ACTUAL colours of leaves and they're not really green!
At least not the green that comes out of a tube, that stuff is too clean, too perfect, too.... green!

What REAL greens look like are a bit dirtier. A bit more toned down... And there's always a bit of death. A leaf dying here, an infestation there, all small nuances that, much like critique, will elevate your painting practice VERY rapidly!

So how do we make our greens more believable?

Complementary: Throw in a bit of red or orange into your greens. This will instantly take out the ๐’ข๐‘…๐ธ๐ธ๐’ฉ! and turn it more into ๐–Œ๐–—๐–Š๐–Š๐–“.

Tone: Add a bit of grey to your green. Even those really bright ones! What you'll find is that it is the contrast and relationship between colours that make things bright and light, NOT the fluro-ness of your green!

Value: ALWAYS!!!! Make sure your greens are dark enough and light enough.

Analogous darkening and lightening: Darken your greens with blue lighten them with yellow... Or blue! The sky is blue after all, so any light reflecting off of your leaves on a bright, sunny, blue skyed day will have some blue in it!

And, as ever, check out our workshops or come to our weekly classes. There is a lot to learn when it comes to painting and we don't need to do it alone!

We are in week 4 of our critique series and today We are in week 4 of our critique series and today we're introducing Edge!

Edge refers to the space where one thing becomes another... Sometimes that edge is really hard and abrupt: A cliff, a strong shadow, an outline.
Sometimes an edge is really soft; like the way light dances across our nose and cheek, sunlight across a rose's petal, the way a shadow slowly gives way to light around a sphere.

Using the wrong type of edge for a space will instantly do one of two things: cut through your picture and make it look like a cartoon, or nothing will make sense.

But using edge well will give your piece instant elevation!
So HOW do you use edge well?

You learn how to critique!!! And critique isn't something you do once, it's a practice to utilise a million times over and over with each piece you're working on!
Which is why we have it on repeat in our classroom and why every single workshop features a little bit on critique!

Need more info? Well you're going to have to come and hang out with us sweet friends!

We have limited spots in our weekly classes and workshops galore, so why not give your creative self a glow-up and learn some new stuff?

Workshops workshops workshops workshops! We don't Workshops workshops workshops workshops!

We don't know everything there is to know about any one of these topics. In fact, we think you could probably keep on learning art theory forever... But we do know more than the average person wandering around.
In fact, quite a few seasoned artists have been to our workshops repeatedly because we go down rabbit holes, friends!!!
More importantly, we break it all down for you.

We teach you WHY we chose this colour and not that colour.
We make mistakes and explain WHY it's a mistake and HOW we can fix it.
We paint demo pieces so you can see it all happening in real time AND we share each and every decision we're making.

We love them because:
- We get to get REAL nerdy about what we're teaching you.
- Everyone is in the same boat, and it's a learning boat!!!!
- We get to ask stupid questions and answer stupid questions and we all grow smarter.

IT'S A DREAM!

Tickets are available via our link in bio OR artstree.com.au > SHOP> Workshops in Wynnum.

A few works in progress from the studio classroom A few works in progress from the studio classroom at the moment!

We agree, Mum and I, that one of the best things here at Arts Tree is that every student is working on their own piece at their own pace. This means that every class we teach has a little element of surprise thrown in!

We've got students painting toy cars, jungles, rivers, flowers, and birds of prey doing what they do best... eating their catch!

The most important element that this brings to our classroom is that each student is intrinsically invested in making their paintings come to life.

We aren't in the business of pushing our students towards a goal that matters to us or our egos... no no no. We're here FOR our students, and they'll paint the painting that they want to paint, maybe with just a little bit of creative collaboration!

If painting in a room of people individually invested in making their own dreams come true sounds amaaaaazing, then why not join up for a weekly class?

We've got 4 classes with @brave__arts and 2 classes with @degillettcox... spaces in some of them!
Give us a text or a call on 0437 146 359 and find out where we can fit you in!

Have you ever painted an image that's filled with Have you ever painted an image that's filled with all the right colours but it just doesn't look right?

What about flat? Have you ever painted a piece that looked like pancake?

Ever been bored just looking at your painting?
Or maybe confused because you don't know where one thing ends and another begins?

We would bet good money that you have some Tonal Values to correct!!!

We've said it before and we'll say it again, VALUES ARE SUPERIOR TO COLOUR! Tonal Values are what provide form, so if your values are wrong, everything is very same same.

Your colours might be different, but if they're not different values they won't be telling the right story.... The story of light and how it travels across the surface of your subject.

When you're critiquing your piece and trying to work out what's wrong/ what to do next always check in with 'Tone'.

We've listed a couple of ways that we do it in classes here at Arts Tree, but how do you manage to critique your values?
Or is this brand new to you and you have NO IDEA what we're talking about?

If it's the latter, then stop letting it hold you and your creative practice back! We've got workshops and weekly classes for that!

A critique workshop in August.
Followed by a Portraiture workshop also in August.
And an Applied Colour Theory workshop in October.

Basically, when it comes to foundational art making necessities, Arts Tree has your back!

Find everything you need via our website, artstree.com.au > SHOP > Workshops in Wynnum or head to the link in our bio.
