Back in 2020, after the spicy cough came and rocke

Back in 2020, after the spicy cough came and rocked our world... we hosted our first and kind of last Negative Painting workshop.

Why?
We're not sure...
Regardless, it's back baby!!!!!

Have a scroll through and you'll see what some of our students achieved across the weekend all those years ago.

But basically, negative painting is achieved through painting AROUND your object.

pics 2 & 3) The original background was all those reds and yellows that have since become leaves.
pic 4) The background was the colour you can see for those mangrove roots, we painted around them with opaque blue.
pic 5) The background was those deep blues that are now the shadows of people standing on a beach.

See how we've painted around the positive shape of our object, thus filling in the negative space????

Did you know you can repaint over old canvasses you don't care for anymore?
This student came to us last year and her very first piece was delightful... at the time.
However, new year new you and all of a sudden she just wasn't vibing it that much... See pic 2.

We have two options here:
1) Hold onto something we don't really like just because we painted it that one time. AND spend $$$ on a new canvas.
2) Paint over it and reuse that beautiful canvas!

Whilst we can feel attached to previous pieces we've created, they'll end up literally suffocating us if we don't get rid of them or recycle what we can.
Also, art is an expensive hobby, save where you can!

ONE THING: Take a photo before you paint over it!
Feeling pride over what we've created never goes out of fashion, so make sure you've got proof of all your good work while you keep on making new stuff.

Now, go for a walk around the house and plan some transformations!

One of the hardest part of any painting process is

One of the hardest part of any painting process is being able to see through the next layers, and trust that you'll be able to deal with whatever pops up.

We display all of student's works in progress around our classroom for two reasons;
1) We have to, it's a storage thing.
2) We ALL get to see the weird, wacky, and sometimes awful points along the way to a finished piece.

So, with this in mind, can you guess what this student is painting???
Hint:
It is a rather famous piece by a rather famous artist.

Have you ever tried creating your own unique image from collaged ideas?
That's exactly what one of our students is doing here... Creating a love canvas (is that a thing?) that captures just some of the greatness that the Beatles and Paul McCartney have brought into her life.

The composition is still being played with but we've got bits and pieces from all of her favourite albums, her fave picture of Paul himself and all sorts of meaningful trinkets thrown around.

Not surprisingly, this piece is taking longer to come to life than simply capturing the elegance of an already created image or scene... Which can be frustrating for new artists!

Frequently, while we may have an innate knowing of what we're after, actually creating that image can be mighty hard! Most often we come to the solution through endless renditions of what doesn't work... Just like Eddison, Ford, Davinci, and all the other great inventors that have lived on this earth.

Artists are scientists, make no mistake!
And that's why having an experienced tutor who has worked in those artistic trenches can be so dang beneficial... While we can't do the work for you, we can at least commiserate, encourage, and cry in frustration with you!

We've got students strengthening their bond to their creative self, students learning a new style that fascinates them...
Students wanting to create a new career, students searching for a sense of Self...

Basically, if it can be learnt through a creative endeavour, it's being taught here at our school!

We do have a few limited spots in our weekly classes and our workshops are ALMOST ready for the website....

We're baaaaaaaaaack!!

Classes started for 2025 THIS week and we are ready, pumped, excited, and energised!

If you're an adult, looking for art classes that expand your horizons, and ready to leap into the unknown, then we have some very limited spots in our classes available for you.... Wooooohoooooooo!!!

A few facts:
We're in Wynnum, Brisbane.
We're an acrylics based, expressionist art school.
We cater to all skill levels.
There's 10 students per class.
Classes are around $180 per month.
We'll blow your gosh darn mind!

We run 6 classes across Tuesday to Thursday and have 9 spaces available for some lucky painters to fill.

Tues 9:30am -12pm and 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Wed 1pm - 3:30pm and 6:30pm - 8:30pm
Thurs 6:30pm - 8:30pm

We've got free trials if you would like to check out the vibe first, so all you need to do is give us a call to book in your space!

WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
2024, we did it!!!!

We closed our classroom doors for the year last night, and whilst we are tired and ready for a break we are also so dang proud of our students and our little art school!

Around 300 paintings have whirled through our doors over the course of the last year and every single one of them has taught us something...
But probably the biggest lessons of 2024 were these two:

1) Get intentional.
Take the time to get conscious with your mark making, your thoughts, your process... The bits you enjoy, the bits you hate.
Get intentional with what you want to get out of your art practice and it will show up.

2) Celebrate the small stuff.
The rest of your painting may look shit, but if there's one little corner that's just lovely? Love it!!!! Draw attention toward it, thank it for showing up, and let it teach you. You don't need to wait for a perfectly finished piece to feel a bit of pride. Let it grow in teeny tiny ways and you'll be amazed at the space you take up!
