Arts Tree is all about embracing the bloody thrivi Arts Tree is all about embracing the bloody thriving deliciousness of our world and our students continually step up to that base and claim it!!

We've been painting with up to 60 students a week for the last 13 years and that means A LOT of paintings have walked through our doors.
What's always a treat is to see what our individual little artists choose to reinvent, and we never get sick of seeing it all come to life!

We will be closing our doors FOREVER at the end of November this year so if you're wanting to get a painting or two done between now and then, we HIGHLY recommend you get started and come to one fo the two classes we can fit you in!

Wednesday and Thursday nights: 6:30-8:30pm, $160 per month.

Sound fun? Give us a call and book in! 0437146359

Grounding a canvas... Is how we ALWAYS get started Grounding a canvas... Is how we ALWAYS get started here at Arts Tree.

Grounding is a way to get rid of that boring white of your canvas. White, while lovely, gives you no tonal value, so you can't effectively see the true value of any of your lights because your whole canvas is a highlight!

Davinci used to ground with Burnt Sienna.
Sometimes we still do, but we've also got a whole bunch of other ways to do it!

We ground with sporadic colours messed around together.
Sometimes, we keep them messy but also consider placement a little more.
Other times we may stick to a singular colour while others still we'll begin with textures before adding colour.

There's so many ways to get started and VERY RARELY a wrong answer!
They do exist, kind of, but to be honest, there's usually a work around!

Just keep your grounding to a mid-tone, not too dark, not too light... the kind that Goldilocks might approve of!

What about you, how do you get grounded on your canvas??

Based on our observations of our students across t Based on our observations of our students across the last 13 years, we're here to tell you that NOT learning colour theory is actually harder than learning it.

Because by NOT learning it, a really simple, very key part of your painted images will always be guess work.
However, if you simply LEARN it, this core aspect of anything colourful will instantly become knowable and thus be transformed!!

The first colour combo is just a bit gross. It's kind of a complementary tetrad, but it's a little off.. The hues are also a little too similar in saturation and tone thus making it a bit shouty.

A workaround would be to get rid of that purple and stick to an analogous combo. By providing your eye with some shifted saturations you'll notice that pic 3 is a lot easier to look at.

Another option would be to utilise a more dialled down complementary mix that's a little tighter, with greater variance in tones and saturation. You'll notice that pic 4 doesn't feel as chaotic as the first option!

All of the above however are simply OPTIONS... because options are what you get when you learn colour theory!!!

And yes, We've got workshops for that!!
2 x single day workshops coming for you in October, our last workshops of the year and our last workshops EVER, so get in, learn the good stuff then go create some chaos in your studio, wooohoooo!!!!

Here we have a sweet lil birb, painted by one of o Here we have a sweet lil birb, painted by one of our newest students for her first painting ever here at Arts Tree!!!!

The Lilac-breasted Roller is apparently around 38cm long, including the tail, and this painting of one is at least 5 times the size, which we think is perhaps why it keeps making us laugh. It's quite funny to have a gigantic bird casting such judgement upon you!

But what we love the most about this painting has been the ABSOLUTE trust that our student has put in our hands.... And believe us when we say, that trust has been tested!

Not because of anything we've said as such, but because the painting process here at Arts Tree can get a tad experimental!

This painting began on a grounding of fluorescent pink and transparent red oxide before successive layers of lights, darks, glazing, texture, stencils, spatter and more lights and darks brought it all home.

Why do we do all those layers??? Why not?
Why not take your time and create something magic that has a side of crazy woven into it?
Why not play around and see what works, what's fun, what fits?

Why insist on reality when you can get a bit expressionistic instead????

We bloody love it and we hope you do too!
If you would like to come along to our final few months here at Arts Tree we have limited spots in our Wednesday and Thursday evening classes, so why not give us a call?

Making something glow on your canvas isn't as simp Making something glow on your canvas isn't as simple as painting a candlestick or a lamp and hoping for the best... You can if you want to of course...
But we reckon you'll get far better results by paying attention to the Kelvin scale for light temperatures and following what is scientifically accurate for light temperature!

At odds with colour theory and colour temperature, the Kelvin scale speaks about the temperature of light.
The reds that we equate with warmth in colour theory talk about a cold(ish) flame.
Think about red coals in comparison to a burning hot white flame. The coals are red which means that though they are still hot, they're not as hot as the white flames... and definitely not as hot as the blue flames of a blowtorch!

When creating glow, you want to have your reds and oranges toward the cooler edges of your source of heat, while the centre of that source will get whiter and then bluer depending on its temperature.

Need to know more?
We've got workshops for that!

Head on over to artstree.com.au > SHOP > workshops to have a look at our upcoming colour theory workshops, designed to help make colour a little more understood!

There are many different ways to utilise colour in There are many different ways to utilise colour in a painting... So always remember to have fun while you're doing it!

While you're having fun however, remember that you don't need to reinvent colour theory, it's already there, nice and handy for us to use.

Need to sink something further back in your canvas?
TONE it down.
COOL it down.
Take the red and yellow out.
Keep your tonal variances nice and tight.

And the above is, of course, in reference to the foreground and midground.
Toned in comparison to the area in front of it.
Cooled in comparison to the area in front of it.
Less red and yellow than.... YOU GET THE DRIFT??

The thing is... if you DON'T get the drift that's simply because you haven't learnt about colour theory yet!

By getting curious about the world we can observe with our own two eyes we can create beautiful, believable, surreal or picture perfect paintings... The choice is ours!

If you're finding it hard to work out colour, we've got workshops for that!!
In fact, they'll be our last workshops of the year and the last workshops held at Arts Tree as it is... So make sure you come along!

Learning how to paint isn't about how to be perfec Learning how to paint isn't about how to be perfect.

No, no no...

It's about how to tolerate and work through the many occasions in which your painting is decidedly NOT perfect.

Which is very much what our students learnt during our recent 'Colourful Portraits' workshop with our tutor @brave__arts

This style of working features a step called 'colour vomit', which isn't very romantic but it get's the point across... It's about not-thinking, its about letting mistakes roll all over your canvas. It's about not-thinking, and simply doing.

WHY????

Because friends, there are many, many ways and layers that we can use to help us toward perfect, but if we don't leave any space for simply existing, then how the hell will THE MAGIC get in?

And of course, with a tutor holding your hand who understands colour theory, and trusts her ability to analyse and correct mistakes, how bad can it be???

While these paintings aren't quite finished, our students (most of whom were painting their 1st portrait) have walked away with the skills they need to keep going, AND THAT'S WHAT WE'RE ALL ABOUT!

We've got colour theory workshops coming up, so if freedom from perfectionism is what you're needing, then man, have we got you!!!

Check it all out at artstree.com.au

And a HUGE THANKYOU to our students who make every single one of our days a bit more colourful!

Two days. Two workshops. An absolute truckload of Two days.
Two workshops.
An absolute truckload of colour knowledge!

Colour, much like drawing, or the various ways to use a paintbrush, is a FOUNDATIONAL tool.

Have you ever tried to build a house without a foundation?
Probably not, and for good reason! Without a strong foundation (even if it's simply packed earth), the rest of your house will crumble.

When it comes to art making, without foundational skills your practice will stall. It will become trapped and stagnant, unable to grow and change because YOU are unable to grow and change.

The foundations give our walls the structure and stability they need to hold up the roof. Likewise, in the studio, our foundations give us the courage we need to keep building.

The very cool thing is that colour theory is a skill!!!
It can be learnt, and it's not that hard.
While what we teach you is a bit more in-depth than what your primary or high school teacher was able to fit in, it's easy to digest and designed for beginners to understand.

If colour theory is pretty much an unknown to you, we HIGHLY recommend you at least come to Colour Wheel Basics on Oct 18.

If you kind of understand the wheel but don't get how it helps you to paint an image, come to Applied Colour Theory on Oct 19.

But ideally, come to both!!

Tickets and information packs at the usual spot on artstree.com.au > SHOP > Workshops

And keep in mind, this is our last year for workshops like this, so snap it up!!

A weekly roundup of our student's work in progress A weekly roundup of our student's work in progress!

We have up to 10 students in each class, everyone working on their own thing at their own pace...
And we come in and teach them the skill set that's missing.
Or maybe we suggest a few alternative processes.
Or... We might wipe it off and start again, because sometimes we need to do that!

The biggest thing in our classes is the community. It's full, vibrant, encouraging, and often hilarious. Music is vibing, art is flowing, things are being learnt, it's a treat!

We've got limited spots available but if you're keen on a class we've got space in Wednesday and Thursday nights.
Give us a call on 0437 146 359 if you'd like some more info, or head to the website artstree.com.au.
